The family of a 46-year-old man shot to death in Brooklyn<\/a> is struggling to cope with the fresh tragedy nine years after the victim\u2019s mother was killed by a hit-and-run driver in front of their home, the man\u2019s brother told the Daily News.<\/p>\n

Marcin Iwanowicz was blasted in the chest around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday outside a methadone clinic he was visiting near Powell St. and Belmont Ave. in Brownsville, according to cops and the victim\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s shocking because it\u2019s Christmas Eve morning. He got shot for nothing,\u201d said Iwanowicz\u2019s brother, Cezary Iwanowicz, 41. \u201cI\u2019m basically in shock.\u201d<\/p>\n

The shooting happened a desolate stretch of sidewalk next to the St. Jude Treatment Center<\/a>, a substance abuse rehab facility the victim was visiting. No arrests have been made.<\/p>\n

Marcin was taking methadone to help with an addiction he developed after injuring his shoulder, according to his brother.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wasn\u2019t working because he was disabled,\u201d Cezary said. \u201cHe went to the program because he wanted methadone. He had an addiction to painkillers. Methadone can help with that. He never came back. He had been in the program for years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe family has endured more than one sudden tragedy,\u201d the brother added.<\/p>\n

On Oct. 8, 2016, the brothers\u2019 mother, Krystyna Iwanowicz, was run over by a hit-and-run driver<\/a> while crossing the street in front of the family\u2019s Midwood apartment building.<\/p>\n

The driver, Joseph Zayats, then 22, struck her with a Jeep SUV, catapulting her into the air. Zayats, a Hatzolah EMT, then abandoned the vehicle and ran away from the scene before turning himself in the next day.<\/p>\n

In 2017, Zayats pleaded guilty to a sole count of misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident and was sentenced to two years\u2019 probation<\/a> and $588 in fines and fees, according to court records.<\/p>\n

Now the family is reeling from a new tragedy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI only found out last night at 9 p.m., already 12 hours after it happened,\u201d Cezary said of his brother\u2019s shock slaying. \u201cThe police didn\u2019t tell us much, just that he was shot and didn\u2019t make it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cezary thinks his brother got in an argument with someone outside the clinic when he went for treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a good guy,\u201d he said. \u201cEveryone has faults, but he was a good person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marcin left the family\u2019s apartment around 6 a.m. Wednesday and said he would be back by 10 a.m., his father, Stanislaw Iwanowicz, tearfully told News 12 Brooklyn<\/a>. When Marcin didn\u2019t return hours later, his dad started calling him repeatedly \u2014 but his son never responded. Finally, the family heard from cops.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t sleep all night,\u201d the father told the station. \u201cI just cried half of the night. I didn\u2019t eat nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marcin spoke to the Polish Daily News<\/a> following his mother\u2019s death. Krystyna, 64, who suffered from multiple sclerosis and used a walker, was \u201cvery slow and cautious\u201d when walking, \u201calways waiting for the cars to stop \u2026 to make sure it\u2019s safe to cross the street,\u201d he said at the time.<\/p>\n
