Before OpenAI, she was a senior engineering manager at Google, where she led Cloud Spanner and managed large-scale database systems, according to her LinkedIn profile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Yang said <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/cold-linkedin-message-landed-me-my-job-at-openai-2025-7?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a recruiter;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">a recruiter <\/a>reached out to her on a Monday about a role leading a team that aligned with her background. She agreed to an initial conversation, which took place the following day with the hiring manager and technical lead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">By Wednesday, Yang completed the full interview, which she said ran from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. She received an offer on Thursday and signed it the next day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Yang said one key part of the process was an interview round known as a &#8220;technical deep dive&#8221; \u2014 or a &#8220;research discussion&#8221; for research-focused roles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Candidates can choose a topic to discuss with a researcher. For engineering candidates, that often means walking through systems they have built, explaining the problems they were trying to solve, and describing the trade-offs behind key decisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;You really get to see the intellect of your interviewer as well and how much they know about your area,&#8221; Yang said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/want-work-at-openai-curiosity-grit-matter-more-than-phd-2025-7?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Beyond technical skills;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Beyond technical skills<\/a>, Yang said there is one skill candidates must master if they want to work at OpenAI: being &#8220;brutally efficient&#8221; with their time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">With many projects underway, employees need to focus only on work where their skills offer <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/openai-meta-superintelligence-labs-tips-getting-hired-phd-llm-interview-2025-10?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a clear advantage;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">a clear advantage<\/a>, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Yang added that candidates should lean heavily on <a href=\"https:\/\/tech.yahoo.com\/ai\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:AI tools;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI tools<\/a> and think about task automation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to OpenAI&#8217;s interview guide, candidates typically go through r\u00e9sum\u00e9 screening, introductory calls, skills-based assessments, and final interviews.
