\n\tZack Snyder<\/a> marked the Christmas holiday with a special gift to fans in the form of photos of Henry Cavill<\/a> wearing Christopher Reeves\u2019 original Superman<\/a> suit. The images are what Snyder showed to Warner Bros. executives when he was trying to cast Cavill as Clark Kent\/Superman in his new DC Universe, which was kicking off with 2013\u2019s \u201cMan of Steel.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHenry Cavill. The original Superman suit. This photo. It was undeniable,\u201d Snyder wrote in one caption, while adding in another: \u201cWith the last image I shared, and this one, we showed WB [and] everyone agreed: Henry Cavill was Superman. That\u2019s where the journey began.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tCavill played Superman across three movies in Snyder\u2019s DC Universe: \u201cMan of Steel,\u201d \u201cBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice\u201d and \u201cJustice League.\u201d Then things got complicated. After a five-year hiatus that left fans wondering about Cavill\u2019s Superman future, he popped up as the Man of Steel in the post-credits scene of 2022\u2019s \u201cBlack Adam.\u201d Cavill\u2019s reappearance coincided with reports <\/a>that a standalone Superman sequel for him was finally in development with the studio soliciting pitches from writers. The post-credits scene teased the DC Universe would then be heading towards a battle between Cavill\u2019s Superman and Dwayne Johnson\u2019s Black Adam.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI am back as Superman,\u201d Cavill wrote in an Instagram post <\/a>at the time. \u201cThank you for your support and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tTwo days later, Cavill spoke publicly for the first time about his Superman return during a live recording of the \u201cHappy Sad Confused\u201d podcast at 92NY in New York City and said: \u201cThere is such a bright future ahead for the character. I\u2019m so excited to tell a story with an enormously joyful Superman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCavill\u2019s return was not long for this world, however. Just a day after the announcement, news broke that James Gunn and Peter Safran were taking over DC Studios and launching a new DC Universe. This would effectively end Snyder\u2019s DC Universe, in which Cavill had been front and center. Gunn said on the \u201cHappy Sad Confused<\/a>\u201d podcast earlier this year that an \u201cunfair\u201d situation was created when his deal to take over DC Studios closed just as Cavill was announcing his return. Gunn had planned on rebooting Superman from the start, which he successfully did this summer with his David Corenswet-starring \u201cSuperman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe day our [DC] deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back,\u201d Gunn said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m like, \u2018What is going on?\u2019 We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do \u2018Superman.\u2019 So it was really unfair to him and a total bummer\u2026 \u201cThat was really unfortunate. So Peter and I [thought] the right thing to do was to sit down with [Cavill] and talk to him. And we sat down and we talked to him. He was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it. He said, \u2018The only thing I ask is that I\u2019m able to reveal it myself as opposed to it coming from you guys.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThrough all of the presumable drama, Gunn and Snyder stayed in touch. Gunn\u00a0revealed on X<\/a>\u00a0shortly after taking over DC Studios that he had touched base with Snyder and there were no hard feelings between them. Gunn told Fandango<\/a> earlier this yea that he even consulted with Snyder when it came to designing the new Superman suit and whether or not to add the red trunks.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOne of the biggest questions was, \u2018Were we gonna have trunks, or were we gonna not have trunks?\u2019\u201d Gunn said. \u201cI talked to Zack Snyder, who was like, \u2018I tried a billion different versions with the trunks, and at the end of the day, I tried it, but I just couldn\u2019t get there.\u2019 And I was feeling exactly the same way. \u2026 Theoretically, I liked the idea of trunks because it\u2019s the Superman I grew up with.\u201d<\/p>\n
