Los Angeles Democratic Mayor Karen Bass<\/a> expressed disappointment and concern Friday with Hispanics joining Border Patrol \u2013 arguing they\u2019re only doing it for the paycheck.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, in a way, I think it\u2019s sad,\u201d Bass said of a CNN report on Border Patrol\u2019s<\/a> new recruits, many of which are Hispanic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that those Border Patrol agents<\/a> are going to have a difficult time when they\u2019re out in the field and they see what actually happens in real life separate from their training,\u201d the mayor told \u201cThe Situation Room\u201d host Wolf Blitzer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The report<\/a> Bass was asked to respond to included interviews with Hispanic agents and recruits explaining how they respond to critics who say they are arresting their \u201cown kind\u201d or \u201cown blood.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2018t come in the right way. So, they aren\u2018t my kind,\u201d 20-year-old Border Patrol recruit Juan Peralta told CNN correspondent David Culver.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Border Patrol Agent Claudio Herrera explained that he has no qualms with carrying out his duties.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m protecting my community,\u201d the proud agent said. \u201cI\u2019m protecting both sides of the border.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than half of Border Patrol agents are Hispanic, according to federal government data<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bass believes Hispanic Americans are flocking to join the agency \u201cprimarily\u201d for financial reasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI do understand that their primary incentive is financial,\u201d the mayor said. \u201cI think it just speaks to the financial situation that millions of Americans find themselves in.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I definitely am concerned about that report.\u201d<\/p>\n

Funding for border security included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act has allowed Border Patrol to offer handsome bonuses<\/a> to new hires.\u00a0<\/p>\n

New Border Patrol agents are eligible for up to $60,000 in incentives, according to the agency<\/a>, including $10,000 after completing the academy and an additional $10,000 if assigned to a remote location.\u00a0<\/p>\n
