{"id":474264,"date":"2025-12-27T04:33:27","date_gmt":"2025-12-27T04:33:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/474264\/"},"modified":"2025-12-27T04:33:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-27T04:33:27","slug":"from-red-donkeys-to-vibrant-art-colorblind-painters-colorful-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/474264\/","title":{"rendered":"From red donkeys to vibrant art: Colorblind painter&#8217;s colorful journey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">DORAL, Fla. &#8212; When Fernando D\u00e1vila was 8 years old in Colombia, he failed a drawing class because he painted donkeys red.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">There was a reason for that: He is colorblind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Now the 72-year-old D\u00e1vila is an established and respected artist whose vibrant paintings have been exhibited in South America, Europe and the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cI have the most wonderful job in the world, which is painting every morning,\u201d D\u00e1vila said from his studio in a Miami suburb. \u201cTo mix colors. To have joy to share with the world, that&#8217;s really my passion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">He started off painting only in black and white until he was around 30 years old because of his colorblindness, a congenital condition which <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/eye-health-information\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/color-blindness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">makes it difficult<\/a> for people to tell the difference between certain colors, particularly red and green, and shades of color. There is no cure for the condition, which for D\u00e1vila also makes the colors pink, violet, turquoise and yellow-green confusing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Since the mid-1980s, D\u00e1vila has painted in color through the help of glasses developed by an ophthalmologist in New York, where D\u00e1vila was living at the time. One lens is transparent and the other is shaded red, and they help him discriminate between contrasting shades that normally blur together. With the lenses, he can see almost two-thirds of the colors, but without them he only sees around 40% of the colors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">D\u00e1vila compared his condition to having a box of chocolates but only being able to eat a sample of the selection. He says he has such a strong desire to see every color.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIt&#8217;s something that I miss in my life, that if somebody says, \u2018Look at this flower,\u2019 which is bright, bright pink, I want to do it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt&#8217;s something that comes from my heart so passionately. I can feel the vibration of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Colorblindness runs his family. A grandfather and some great uncles only saw in black and white, while his mother and her three sisters also were colorblind even though the condition is rarer in women. His two brothers also have trouble discriminating between colors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">D\u00e1vila has spent his career in Colombia, New York and Florida. He was awarded the \u201cOrder of Democracy\u201d by the Colombian Congress in 1999 for his contribution to the arts.
