{"id":474820,"date":"2025-12-27T10:59:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-27T10:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/474820\/"},"modified":"2025-12-27T10:59:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-27T10:59:16","slug":"bears-introduce-new-coach-ralph-jones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/474820\/","title":{"rendered":"Bears introduce new coach Ralph Jones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here\u2019s a look back at what happened in the Chicago area on Dec. 27, according to the Tribune\u2019s archives.<\/p>\n<p>Is an important event missing from this date? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/12\/27\/chicago-history-december-27\/mailto:krumore@chicagotribune.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Email us<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weather records <\/strong>(from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/wrh\/climate?wfo=lot\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Weather Service, Chicago<\/a>)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High temperature: <strong>61 degrees<\/strong> (2008)<\/li>\n<li>Low temperature: <strong>Minus 10 degrees<\/strong> (1950)<\/li>\n<li>Precipitation: <strong>1.74 inches<\/strong> (2008)<\/li>\n<li>Snowfall: <strong>10.1 inches<\/strong> (1894)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>1929:<\/strong> The Chicago Bears introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ralph-jones-is-signed-to\/160035585\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ralph Jones<\/a>, of Lake Forest Academy, as their coach.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"uKrWKGxFjK\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/01\/23\/chicago-bears-coach-first-words\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">From George Halas to Ben Johnson: What was said about every Chicago Bears coach when they were hired<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe believe our hope for development of a winning team would be increased if we could turn the squad over to a professional coach,\u201d Bears co-owner <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-bears-and-their-new-coac\/187388088\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">George Halas<\/a> said. \u201cNeither Ed (Sternaman) nor I had time to coach the Bears. Last season, the worst since we entered professional football with the old Staleys, the coaching responsibility was divided between us and Ralph Scott. (Fred Giese\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1944:<\/strong> Eight months after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2000\/12\/30\/dec-30-2000-editorial-the-boss-who-doomed-wards-2\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2000\/12\/30\/dec-30-2000-editorial-the-boss-who-doomed-wards-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sewell Avery<\/a>, chairman of Montgomery Ward &amp; Co., refused to renew a union contract on orders of the War Labor Board \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/04\/27\/chicago-history-april-27\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the feds moved in<\/a>, literally, and <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ward-quiz-on-in-congress\/171069361\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ward-quiz-on-in-congress\/171069361\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moved Avery out<\/a> \u2014 President Franklin D. Roosevelt <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-wards-strike-called-tod\/187387478\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ordered another seizure<\/a> of the company.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"zZIOEE0YQq\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/10\/10\/chicago-when-national-guard-was-activated\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The National Guard has been activated to Chicago 18 times from 1877-2021. Here\u2019s a breakdown.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The company fought the government takeover, saying its goods were not related to the war effort, but it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2000\/12\/29\/founder-a-force-in-retail-civic-affairs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost its battle<\/a> in the courts.<\/p>\n<p>Avery didn\u2019t get his company back till 1945. Then, fearing a postwar depression, he refused to expand along with his competitors, and Wards hopelessly lost ground.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"One survivor of a North Central Airlines plane that crashed into a hangar and exploded at O'Hare International Airport on Dec. 27, 1968, told the Tribune how he escaped from the aircraft. &quot;I popped open the emergency window, said 'Let's get out of here,' and jumped,'&quot; said U.S. Air Force Sgt. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1968: <\/strong>Buffeted by wingtip turbulence from a jet that had just taken off, a North Central Airlines Convair 580\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-plane-rams-hangar-27-ot\/164289536\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-plane-rams-hangar-27-ot\/164289536\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost control while taking off<\/a>\u00a0and hit a hangar at O\u2019Hare.
