It marked the first time snowfall there has exceeded 4 inches since January 2022, when over 8 inches was observed.<\/p>\n

CLARY \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n Expand<\/a><\/p>\n The snowfall was at its most intense overnight \u2014 when it came down as quickly as 2 inches per hour at times \u2014 before it slowed in the early hours of Saturday. While a few flakes were expected to fall in the early afternoon, the snow should mostly be done for the day, meteorologists said, though the cold will persist through the weekend.<\/p>\n Temperatures<\/a> on Saturday weren\u2019t expected to top 30 degrees, and could drop down into the low 20s overnight. Sunday, meanwhile, is forecast to be mostly sunny with temperatures expected to climb into Monday, when highs will reach nearly 50 degrees. Until then, though, the snow will stick and so too will the hazardous travel conditions.<\/p>\n The fast-moving snowstorm on Friday caused the cancellation of hundreds of flights<\/a> at NYC\u2019s three major airports, and the disruptions persisted into Saturday<\/a>, according to FlightAware. It came during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey anticipating nearly 15 million travelers<\/a> passing through the area airports along with its bridges and tunnels for the holiday season.<\/p>\n Preparations began early in New York, which has been mostly spared of snow for the past several years. By midnight on Friday, hundreds of city workers were out and about, spreading salt across the boroughs, said Javier Lojan, acting commissioner of the Sanitation Department. He added that salt-spreading trucks were loaded and ready by 4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n As of 6 a.m. Saturday, every street in New York City had received at least one pass with the department\u2019s snowplows. Roughly 2,700 employees were working 12-hours shifts and were expected to continue throughout the day.<\/p>\n \u201cYes, the white stuff arrived. Snow melts and refreezes<\/a>,\u201d NYC Sanitation wrote on social media Saturday morning. \u201cPlows and salt spreaders will be out as long as needed to address icy conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n While the roads were mostly clear by late morning, Mayor Adams still recommended New Yorkers stay home or go out on foot, but keep driving to a minimum.<\/p>\n \u201cOnce you get past the initial traffic, it\u2019s a lot of fun,\u201d he said about the snow during an appearance on WABC<\/a>. \u201cChristmas and New Year\u2019s in New York is a great place to be.\u201d<\/p>\n He gave a \u201chats off\u201d to the Department of Sanitation, FDNY, NYC Emergency Management and his own office for coordinating snow removal efforts.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\n
