A bill that would require state agencies to share certain tax information with New Jersey cities that have employer payroll taxes passed the state Senate 36-0 on Monday. The bill was sponsored by Sen. Raj Mukherji and co-sponsored by Sen. Angela McKnight, both of whom represent parts of Jersey City \u2014 one of two New Jersey cities with an employer payroll tax.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Newark and Jersey City imposed 1% taxes on the gross payroll of all private, for-profit employers located in those cities. The taxes are levied on the employers, not on their employees, and do not reduce take-home pay. All revenue generated by Jersey City\u2019s payroll tax funds the city\u2019s public schools. Mukherji said he sponsored the bill that passed the Senate on Monday because \u201cin Jersey City, every dollar for our public schools matters.\u201d<\/p>\n
