A 7.0 magnitude earthquake<\/a>\u00a0struck\u00a0off Taiwan’s<\/a> \u2060northeastern \u200dcoast late on Saturday, the island’s Central Weather Administration said.<\/p>\n

The quake,\u00a0some 32 km (20 miles) off the city of Yilan, hit at\u00a011:05 pm local time (1505 GMT\/UTC) and\u00a0had\u00a0a depth of 73 \u200dkm (45 miles), it added.<\/p>\n

Residents and local media described how the quake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei, as the government sent alerts to public mobile phones.<\/p>\n

Local media reported that some ceilings collapsed and supermarket shelves toppled.<\/p>\n

Rail operators temporarily slowed some train and high-speed rail services as a precaution.<\/p>\n

Within minutes, however,\u00a0the Taipei \u2060city \u200dgovernment said\u00a0there were \u200cno \u200cimmediate \u2060reports of major \u200ddamage.<\/p>\n

The quake was not severe enough for officials to issue a tsunami alert, Reuters news agency cited the country’s fire department as saying.<\/p>\n

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te urged residents to “stay vigilant.” He encouraged them to\u00a0check on family and friends and warned of possible aftershocks.<\/p>\n

Chipmaker TSMC evacuates buildings<\/p>\n

However, the shaking did force evacuations\u00a0at a small number of facilities owned by the world’s largest contract chipmaker, TSMC<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Prioritising \u200bpersonnel \u200bsafety, we are conducting outdoor\u00a0evacuations and headcounts in accordance with emergency \u200dresponse\u00a0procedures. Work safety systems at \u200ball facilities are operating\u00a0normally,” the company\u00a0said \u2060in \u200ba brief statement.<\/p>\n

Taiwan is vital to the global technology sector as\u00a0it produces the most advanced semiconductors, including the cutting-edge chips no other country can currently match.<\/p>\n

Any disruption to Taiwan\u2019s chipmakers would jolt global supply chains, crippling industries from smartphones to cars and pushing up tech prices worldwide.<\/p>\n
