The Philadelphia 76ers endured an unexpected downturn last season, finishing with a 24-58 record, their first losing season since 2017 and outside the play\u2011in tournament entirely.<\/p>\n

Injuries to Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey and 2024 first-round pick Jared McCain ultimately became too much to overcome.<\/p>\n

With the third-worst winning percentage in the Eastern Conference (.293), the Sixers\u2019 performance underscored a pressing need for veteran poise and leadership, a void that will once again be filled with Kyle Lowry.<\/p>\n

According to ESPN\u2019s Shams Charania, Lowry has agreed to a one\u2011year deal to return to his hometown team for what will be his 20th NBA season.<\/p>\n

Lowry was selected 24th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2006 NBA Draft, but was traded to the Houston Rockets midway through the 2008-09 season before ultimately landing with the Toronto Raptors in 2012, where he evolved into a perennial All-Star.<\/p>\n

During his near decade in Toronto (2012-2021), he earned six All\u2011Star nods, a third team All-NBA selection in 2016 and led Toronto to its first NBA title in 2019, finishing as the franchise’s all-time leader in assists (4,277), steals (873) and 3-point field goals (1,518).<\/p>\n

Following brief stints with the Miami Heat and a buyout\u2011market signing in February 2024, Lowry embraced the opportunity to join his hometown 76ers.<\/p>\n

At 39 years old, Lowry\u2019s statistical contributions have tapered, averaging just 3.9 points and 2.7 assists in 18.8 minutes per game last season, but his value transcends the box score.<\/p>\n

Coach Nick Nurse will once again lean on Lowry\u2019s floor leadership and playoff experience, trusting him to guide a young core back into contention.<\/p>\n
