Police said Monday they were looking for someone who shot and critically injured a man near a Bronx park Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n
NYPD officials said the gunfire erupted around 3:30 p.m. on Fulton Avenue and East 173rd Street next to Crotona Park. Officers found a 21-year-old man unconscious with a gunshot wound to his neck, and he was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, according to officials.<\/p>\n
Police were still investigating a motive for the shooting and did not have a description of the suspect.<\/p>\n
The shooting capped off a fairly calm July 4th weekend that NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch touted as the safest in recent memory.<\/p>\n
Tisch said there was one homicide<\/a> Friday, when 29-year-old Tyrone Simmons was fatally shot on Dumont Avenue in East New York around 11:46 p.m.<\/p>\n Several hours later, police said 25-year-old Jonathan McFarlane was stabbed to death Saturday after a fight between a group of people on Sutphin Boulevard and 112th Avenue in Jamaica. Two other men, ages 25 and 24, were wounded in the incident.<\/p>\n The NYPD said it was still looking for suspects in both incidents as of Monday morning.<\/p>\n Police data shows shootings and homicides in the 75th Precinct<\/a>, where Simmons was killed, and the 113th Precinct<\/a>, where McFarlane was killed, are at roughly the same level as they were by the same point last year. Both crime categories had fallen citywide<\/a> by about 23% as of June 29, the data shows.<\/p>\n
