The bill authorizing Union-based Kean University to absorb the financially troubled New Jersey City University (NJCU) passed the New Jersey Legislature on Monday, with both chambers voting to advance it with few amendments.<\/p>\n

The two public universities\u2019 efforts to permanently merge come three years after NJCU declared a financial emergency<\/a> amid declining enrollment and ongoing financial mismanagement. In November, the New Jersey Senate Higher Education Committee heard testimony that NJCU is facing a $25 million structural deficit and nearly $200 million in debt.<\/p>\n
