With a prolific catalogue that crosses multiple genres and decades, there is no slight shortage of incredible Eagles songs that someone could cite as their favorite. There are the obvious picks\u2014think \u201cHotel California\u201d<\/a>, \u201cDesperado\u201d, or this writer\u2019s personal favorites, \u201cOne of These Nights\u201d. But for Vince Gill, country icon-turned-rock \u2018n\u2019 roller who took on Glenn Frey\u2019s role in the band in 2017, his favorite song isn\u2019t one of The Eagles\u2019 most popular. And in fact, the song appears on one of the most divisive albums in the band\u2019s discography.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Rolling Stone in 2017<\/a>, Gill listed \u201cI Can\u2019t Tell You Why\u201d as one of his top five Eagles tracks. The song appears as the second track on The Eagles\u2019 sixth studio album, The Long Run<\/a>. The album was the first to feature original member Randy Meisner\u2019s replacement, bassist Timothy B. Schmit, and the last to feature Don Felder. After The Eagles broke up for the first time in 1980, The Long Run also became the last Eagles album featuring the original lineup.<\/p>\n

While the album might not hold too special a place in the original band\u2019s hearts, \u201cI Can\u2019t Tell You Why\u201d was a no-brainer for Gill. \u201cIt escapes me why Timothy B. Schmit never sang more. Glenn [Frey] composed the solo. It\u2019s one of the most musical expressions I\u2019ve ever heard,\u201d Gill told Rolling Stone.<\/p>\n

Vince Gill Echoed Timothy B. Schmit\u2019s Sentiments From Decades Earlier<\/strong><\/p>\n

Timothy B. Schmit had big shoes to fill when he stepped into Randy Meisner\u2019s role in the late 1970s. In addition to being a great vocalist and instrumentalist, the former bassist composed some of The Eagles\u2019 most beloved hits, including \u201cTake It to the Limit\u201d<\/a>. Schmit had the triply hard task of proving himself as a singer, bassist, and songwriter, all three of which he managed to do on \u201cI Can\u2019t Tell You Why\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was all such a great ride,\u201d Schmit told Music Radar<\/a> of writing, recording, and releasing his original song with The Eagles. \u201cI just kept pinching myself. I did work with Don [Henley] and Glenn [Frey] on that song. They co-wrote it with me. But it was one of those songs that was just \u2018there,\u2019 you know? It\u2019s so simple and bare bones.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the song\u2019s simplicity, it turned into something larger than Schmit\u2019s initial idea. \u201cI remember when it was being developed in the studio,\u201d he continued. \u201cI knew it was a great song\u2014I thought, \u2018Yes! This is an amazing debut for me.\u2019 When we finally mixed it, we had a little listening party at the studio. As people were hearing it, Don turned to me and said, \u2018There\u2019s your first hit.\u2019 That was pretty cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just under four decades later, Vince Gill made it clear he agreed.<\/p>\n
