A maniac snuck up behind a woman and her son as they walked their dog in Union Square and stabbed the plush pooch in the rear, leaving the pup in need of emergency surgery, her owners said Saturday.<\/p>\n
The 1-year-old Bernedoodle, named Hazel, was with owners Orly Nhaissi and her young son Elijah Sherinsky as they strolled home from Breads Bakery around 7 p.m. Friday when a man yelled something.<\/p>\n
The apparently deranged man then bent over and jabbed Hazel with a knife near the intersection of 14th Street near Union Square West.<\/p>\n
Hazel was walking home from a bakery with her owners when a man ran up from behind and stabbed her rear on the right side. Luiz C. Ribeiro for NY Post<\/p>\n
\u201cHe stabbed Hazel, right there in her butt,\u201d said Elijah. \u201cShe didn\u2019t do anything. We were just walking and he yelled something out. I think he said \u2018You\u2019re an idiot.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
The man, who laughed and grinned right after the attack, had a knife, the teen and his mom said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought at first it was a vape,\u201d the 13-year-old said. \u201cBut then I realized it was this pink sheath, black blade. It was a little bigger, I think, than a pocket knife but not a kitchen knife.\u201d<\/p>\n
Elijah ran after the man but then stopped as his worried mom shouted at him to come back.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was yelling \u2018No, No, Elijah come back!\u201d the mom, 46, who\u2019s in professional development, recalled.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought he was going to stab me, but he didn\u2019t,\u201d the teen said.<\/p>\n
The mother and son brought the dog back into their building\u2019s lobby but she was \u201cbleeding a lot,\u201d the mom said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe blood was gushing in the lobby,\u201d Nhaissi said.<\/p>\n
The doorman gave her paper towels and a rag, and other neighbors jumped into help her pick the dog up and take her to the nearby BluePearl Pet Hospital for emergency surgery.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really devastating,\u201d the mom said. \u201cWe\u2019re lucky that he didn\u2019t harm us, but it just kills me. Who stabs a dog, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would anyone stab an innocent, harmless animal?\u201d she asked. \u201cIt\u2019s just because I guess they can.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hazel went through a surgery which took several hours to stitch up her wound, and was home by around 2 a.m. Saturday, the family said.<\/p>\n
Hazel now wears a bag, where blood drains from her wound through a tube. She is expected to take about three months to recover, her owners said.<\/p>\n

The family has pet insurance but has already shelled out $3,200 for the procedure.<\/p>\n
Dad Joe Sherinsky, a 47-year-old lawyer, had a message for the stabber: \u201cGet help.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is our first dog,\u201d he said. \u201cShe\u2019s the best. She\u2019s pure joy.\u201d<\/p>\n
