A 20-year-old man has been granted bail after allegedly assaulting Tim Picton, a prominent Labor Party identity \u2014 an attack police prosecutors say may leave him permanently disabled, if he survives.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr Picton, who played a crucial role in WA Labor’s 2021 landslide victory, was found unresponsive on the ground in the Perth entertainment precinct of Northbridge about 5:30am on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The 36-year-old was taken to Royal Perth Hospital with life-threatening injuries.<\/p>\n

Brodie Jake Dewar, from Lesmurdie, was visibly shaken when he appeared before the Perth Magistrates Court charged with grievous bodily harm.<\/p>\n

Mr Dewar’s lawyer told the court Mr Picton was making unwanted advances on his cousin and he struck him instinctively as he thought Mr Picton was about to attack him.<\/p>\n

Mr Picton remains in hospital in a critical condition and is unable to respond to the allegations.<\/p>\n

Bail conditions<\/p>\n

Mr Dewar was granted bail under strict conditions, including that he does not consume alcohol, leave Western Australia, or contact Mr Picton or his associates from the time of the incident.<\/p>\n

Magistrate Dianne Scaddan said the likelihood of Mr Dewar interfering with witnesses was low, as the prosecution’s case mostly rests on a large amount of camera footage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Police prosecutors said Mr Picton was in a medically-induced coma after emergency surgery at Royal Perth Hospital.<\/p>\n

He had a fractured skull, multiple bleeds and required part of his cranium to be removed.<\/p>\n

They told the court if Mr Picton survives, he may have a permanent disability.<\/p>\n

Mr Dewar is a full-time apprentice and has no criminal record, besides two traffic offences in 2023.<\/p>\n

Family statement\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr Picton’s family issued a statement on Sunday morning thanking emergency services and everyone who has offered support.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Tim remains in hospital in a critical condition,” the statement said.<\/p>\n

“As a family, we are focused entirely on being with him and supporting one another.<\/p>\n

“We would like to sincerely thank St John Ambulance, the medical team at Royal Perth Hospital and WA Police for their care, professionalism and support.<\/p>\n

“We also want to thank Tim’s friends and colleagues for the compassion they have shown to our family during this incredibly difficult time.<\/p>\n

“Tim is a much-loved father, husband, brother and son, as well as a friend to so many across Australia.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Police investigation<\/p>\n

WA Police Assistant Commissioner Martin Haime said Mr Picton did not know the man who has been charged.<\/p>\n

“The actions of the people involved are still subject to investigation; we’re still interviewing a number of witnesses,” Assistant Commissioner Haime said.<\/p>\n

He said police officers were 100 metres away from the area where the alleged attack occurred.<\/p>\n

“Police maintain a strong presence in the CBD and also in Northbridge, police were only moments away when the incident occurred and [the man] was arrested at the scene,” Assistance Commissioner Haime said.<\/p>\n

Politics and mining<\/p>\n

Mr Picton is a prominent member of Perth’s political and mining communities and was currently working as director of strategy for mining giant MinRes.<\/p>\n

He worked for former Victorian premier Dan Andrews before moving to WA, where he was appointed WA Labor’s state secretary and campaign director in 2020, and played a crucial role in getting Mark McGowan re-elected in 2021.<\/p>\n

He is the brother of Chris Picton, the health minister in South Australia.<\/p>\n

WA Premier Roger Cook posted a statement to Facebook on behalf of himself and his wife.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Carly and my thoughts are with former Labor State Secretary and our mate Tim Picton, who is in a serious condition in hospital,” he wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“The whole Labor team are thinking of him and his family during this difficult time.”<\/p>\n

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has also extended a message of support.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I have spoken to Minister Picton; my thoughts are with his family first and foremost,” Mr Malinauskas said.<\/p>\n

“It’s hard to know at these early stages exactly what’s happened to Mr Picton’s brother, but he is unwell and in a serious condition and my thoughts are with Mr Picton and Chris and his beautiful family, and we’ll wait to hear more as details emerge from Western Australia.”<\/p>\n
