Russia highly values the efforts and support of the United States to resolve the Ukrainian conflict and re-establish global security,\u201d <a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics('https:\/\/x.com\/SEPeaceMissions\/status\/2002876838448697741')\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SEPeaceMissions\/status\/2002876838448697741\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SEPeaceMissions\/status\/2002876838448697741\">Witkoff wrote<\/a> on Dec. 21. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">On Dec. 27, the Russian Defense Ministry bragged that it carried out a \u201cmassive strike\u201d on Ukraine, saying it used \u201clong-range precision-guided weapons from land, air, and sea, including Kinzhal hypersonic aeroballistic missiles\u201d to attack \u201cUkrainian military-industrial complex enterprises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The 10-hour bombardment comes one day before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, 47, is set to meet with Donald Trump,79, in Florida to discuss his peace proposal to end the Russia-Ukraine war. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 28: U.S. President Donald Trump (C) and Vice President JD Vance meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office at the White House on February 28, 2025 in Washington, DC. Andrew Harnik\/Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Zelensky said the attack typified Russia\u2019s attitude toward peace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhere is the Russian response to the proposals to end the war, which were made by the United States and the world?\u201d he said on Telegram, adding, \u201cRussian representatives hold long talks. In reality, the \u2018Kinzhal\u2019 and \u2018Shaheds\u2019 speak for them.\u201d \u201cKinzhal\u201d and \u201cShahed\u201d are the missiles and drones used in the attack. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The attack ramps up the pressure on Sunday\u2019s meeting. President Trump has seemingly grown tired of the ongoing war, but has <a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics(&#039;https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/ukraine\/trump-ukraine-europe-russia-peace-talks-wasting-time-zelenskyy-plan-rcna248585&#039;)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/ukraine\/trump-ukraine-europe-russia-peace-talks-wasting-time-zelenskyy-plan-rcna248585\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/ukraine\/trump-ukraine-europe-russia-peace-talks-wasting-time-zelenskyy-plan-rcna248585\">blamed the drawn-out nature of the conflict on Ukraine<\/a> and its allies in Europe, rather than Russia. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Zelensky said that during the meeting, he hopes to convince the United States to pressure Russia to end the war. Artur Widak\/Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cRussia is constantly looking for reasons not to agree [to a peace deal],\u201d he said. \u201cThe answer is very simple: If Ukraine demonstrates its position and it is constructive, while Russia, for example, does not agree, then it means the pressure is insufficient. And this is also something I want to discuss with the president of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">At the center of the talks are Zelensky\u2019s revisions of two peace plans proposed by the United States and Europe. The first U.S. peace plan, originally pitched in November and <a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics(&#039;https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/leaked-call-shows-top-trump-aide-teaching-russia-how-to-suck-up-to-trump\/&#039;)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/leaked-call-shows-top-trump-aide-teaching-russia-how-to-suck-up-to-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/leaked-call-shows-top-trump-aide-teaching-russia-how-to-suck-up-to-trump\/\">drafted by Witkoff<\/a>, was based on a Russian peace plan. Europe balked, saying it was overly generous to Russia, and responded with its own version of a deal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics(&#039;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/24\/world\/europe\/zelensky-demilitarized-zone-offer.html&#039;)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/24\/world\/europe\/zelensky-demilitarized-zone-offer.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/24\/world\/europe\/zelensky-demilitarized-zone-offer.html\">Zelensky\u2019s deal<\/a>, drafted with the U.S., would pull troops out of disputed territory in Donetsk on condition that Russia do the same. Anadolu via Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Trump didn\u2019t seem eager to sign off on Zelensky\u2019s proposal in a conversation with <a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics(&#039;https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/12\/26\/trump-to-politico-zelenskyy-doesnt-have-anything-until-i-approve-it-00706783&#039;)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/12\/26\/trump-to-politico-zelenskyy-doesnt-have-anything-until-i-approve-it-00706783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/12\/26\/trump-to-politico-zelenskyy-doesnt-have-anything-until-i-approve-it-00706783\">Politico<\/a> on Friday, saying of Zelensky, \u201cHe doesn\u2019t have anything until I approve it, so we\u2019ll see what he\u2019s got.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He added, \u201cI think it\u2019s going to go good with him.
