\n\tThe team behind \u201cSuperman<\/a>\u201d is responding to the backlash after director James Gunn<\/a> said the DC tentpole is the story of \u201can immigrant that came from other places.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen asked about the reaction to his comments, James Gunn explained that the movie is for \u201ceveryone\u201d and that he doesn\u2019t have \u201canything to say to anybody\u201d spreading negativity around \u201cSuperman.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m not here to judge people,\u201d he told Variety<\/a> at Monday night\u2019s \u201cSuperman\u201d premiere at Hollywood\u2019s TCL Chinese Theatre. \u201cI think this is a movie about kindness and I think that\u2019s something everyone can relate to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNathan Fillion<\/a>, who plays Guy Gardner, aka Green Lantern, laughed off the negativity and kept his response brief. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAw, somebody needs a hug,\u201d Fillion said. \u201cJust a movie, guys.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tSean Gunn<\/a>, who plays Maxwell Lord in the film, stood up for his brother and emphasized that immigrants are integral to the fabric of America. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy reaction to [the backlash] is that it is exactly what the movie is about,\u201d he said<\/a>. \u201cWe support our people, you know? We love our immigrants. Yes, Superman is an immigrant, and yes, the people that we support in this country are immigrants and if you don\u2019t like that, you\u2019re not American. People who say no to immigrants are against the American way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJames Gunn made waves<\/a> with his Sunday profile in The Times of London after he explained some of the themes and ideals embedded in \u201cSuperman.\u201d He said that the film encompassed \u201cthe story of America,\u201d and on a fundamental level, is about a man looking for a new life away from his homeland. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI mean, \u2018Superman\u2019 is the story of America,\u201d James Gunn said. \u201cAn immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe quote enflamed backlash from commentators online and drew the attention of conservative media outlets like Fox News<\/a>, which deemed \u201cSuperman\u201d \u201cSuperwoke.\u201d Network anchor Kellyanne Conway said of the film, \u201cWe don\u2019t go to the movie theater to be lectured to and to have somebody throw their ideology onto us.\u201d Jesse Watters added, \u201cYou know what it says on his cape? MS13.\u201d <\/p>\n
