The first episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagology.com\/silentmovies\/adventuresofkathlyn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cThe Adventures of Kathlyn\u201d<\/a> \u2014 which was produced by the Chicago-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1986\/08\/10\/as-the-cameras-rolled-chicago-was-dream-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Selig Polyscope Co.<\/a> \u2014 debuted in local theaters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-silent-movie-star-kathly\/187482313\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kathlyn Williams<\/a> starred as Kathlyn, the daughter of a California man who collects wild animals. After receiving a letter that he was <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ad-for-the-adventures-o\/187482848\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">captured in India<\/a>, she travels there to fight for his release. Charles Clary was the villainous Prince Umbullah, whose mission through <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-the-marvelous-men-and-th\/187482389\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">27 reels<\/a> was to capture Kathlyn \u2014 or put an end to her.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"bEZ9HwEUVe\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2015\/05\/21\/archive-when-chicago-and-essanay-films-created-hollywood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archive: When Chicago and Essanay Films created Hollywood<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The release of the episodes was spaced about two weeks apart. In a clever marketing tactic, a book was released at the same time as the serial and adventure lovers could follow along with the story, which was also <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-filmed-novel-a-movie-suc\/187482700\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">printed in the Tribune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Bill Wade (No. 9, at right center) plunges into the line to score the Chicago Bears' winning touchdown in the NFL championship game on Dec. 29, 1963 against the New York Giants. (Tony Berardi Jr.\/Chicago&#8217;s American)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1963:<\/strong> The Chicago Bears <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/12\/24\/vintage-chicago-tribune-bears-playoffs-fog-bowl-double-doink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beat the New York Giants<\/a> 14-10 to win the NFL championship.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Chicago Bears coach Jim Dooley was fired on Dec. 29, 1971. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1971:<\/strong> A 1-13 season in 1969 combined with bad luck and worse quarterbacks doomed Bears coach Jim Dooley. He became the first Bears coach to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-jim-dooley-fired-by-chic\/160038520\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-jim-dooley-fired-by-chic\/160038520\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fired<\/a>\u00a0after going 6-8 in 1971.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHalas never forgave me for the 1-13,\u201d Dooley said in a 2001 interview.<\/p>\n<p>He later returned as an assistant under Mike Ditka.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ZiACTarpu7\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/12\/24\/vintage-chicago-tribune-bears-playoffs-fog-bowl-double-doink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Bears playoff appearances \u2014 including the \u2018Sneakers Game,\u2019 the \u2018Fog Bowl\u2019 and \u2018Double Doink\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A crowd of 45,801 endured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1997\/09\/11\/december-29-1963\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1997\/09\/11\/december-29-1963\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">9-degree temperatures<\/a> and an 11-mph wind at Wrigley Field to watch a dominant Bears defense intercept five passes by Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle \u2014 who was hobbled from a hit by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/07\/18\/ranking-the-100-best-bears-players-ever-no-50-larry-morris\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/07\/18\/ranking-the-100-best-bears-players-ever-no-50-larry-morris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry Morris<\/a>, the game\u2019s MVP. Quarterback\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/06\/14\/ranking-the-100-best-bears-players-ever-no-84-bill-wade\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/06\/14\/ranking-the-100-best-bears-players-ever-no-84-bill-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Wade<\/a>\u00a0sneaked for both touchdowns after interceptions of Tittle passes by Morris and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/07\/03\/ranking-the-100-best-bears-players-ever-no-65-ed-obradovich\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/07\/03\/ranking-the-100-best-bears-players-ever-no-65-ed-obradovich\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ed O\u2019Bradovich<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was the final championship for George Halas as coach.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"David and Sharon Schoo leave the Kane County Courthouse on Jan. 12, 1993, after appearing before Judge John L. (Bill Hogan\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-abandoned-kids-parents\/187483595\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David and Sharon Schoo<\/a>, of St. Charles, were arrested upon their return to Chicago\u2019s O\u2019Hare International Airport from Acapulco, Mexico. David, an engineer at a smoke alarm company, and Sharon, a homemaker, left their 9-year-old and 4-year-old daughters at home. Later in the day, they were charged with felony child abandonment, cruelty to children and misdemeanor child endangerment. Since their maternal grandmother could not care for them, the girls were moved to a foster home.<\/p>\n<p>The Schoos left their children home with \u201cTV dinners and cereal, but no instructions on how to reach their mother and father,\u201d the Tribune reported.<\/p>\n<p>The plight of the Schoo daughters came to light one day after the couple left on the vacation. On Dec. 21, 1992, the two girls filled a bath tub to overflowing, which caused an electrical short circuit in the home that triggered a smoke alarm. They called 911 and then went to a neighbor\u2019s house to wait for police. After the children were discovered alone, they told police their parents had left them home by themselves previously for extended periods.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"apZAHmsa9X\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/12\/05\/vintage-chicago-tribune-revisiting-home-alone-sites-with-the-films-location-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Revisiting \u2018Home Alone\u2019 sites with the film\u2019s location manager<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Schoos were <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-schoos-lawyer-sets-stag\/187484487\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">held on $50,000 bonds<\/a> each at Kane County Jail and were <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-despite-rift-dad-bails\/187484608\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bailed out<\/a> by Sharon Schoo\u2019s estranged father. Two weeks later they <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-schoos-bid-is-rejected\/187484985\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pleaded not guilty<\/a>. In February 1993, a grand jury returned <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-state-charges-schoo-girl\/187485139\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 64-count indictment<\/a> of the parents for charges that included aggravated battery, misdemeanor battery and felony possession of marijuana.<\/p>\n<p>In a plea-bargain agreement designed to spare their daughters more trauma, the Schoos each <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-schoos-get-probation-and\/187485986\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pleaded guilty<\/a> in April 1993 to a misdemeanor count of child neglect. The parents received custody of their girls but also were <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-schoos-on-probation-chi\/187486089\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sentenced to two years of probation<\/a> each and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.<\/p>\n<p>In an update from 1997, the Tribune reported the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-the-schoos-chicago-trib\/15433378\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schoos terminated their parental rights<\/a> to the girls, who were then living with adoptive parents in another locale. Sharon Schoo died in 2003. The attorneys who represented the Schoos were suspended from practicing law for a year for trying to sell the couple\u2019s story to television.<\/p>\n<p>Illinois became <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-revisiting-1992s-home\/187486599\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of the first states<\/a> with specific rules for <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-advocates-still-debate-a\/187487269\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">when a child can be left alone<\/a>, as a result of the Schoos\u2019 case.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman, left, and general manager Phil Emery hold a news conference at Halas Hall in Lake Forest on Jan. 2, 2014.
