{"id":477645,"date":"2025-12-29T12:57:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T12:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/477645\/"},"modified":"2025-12-29T12:57:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T12:57:14","slug":"housing-yoga-and-ice-cream-engage-ocean-beach-community-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/477645\/","title":{"rendered":"Housing, yoga and ice cream engage Ocean Beach community in 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OCEAN BEACH \u2013 The charm of Ocean Beach is that it\u2019s a walkable beachside community with bohemian vibes and an independent streak regarding authority and corporations.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cOB bubble\u201d does exist, but that didn\u2019t insulate the neighborhood completely through 2025.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Group tries to preserve OB church; thwart housing project<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>In February, a coalition attempted to maintain a historic Ocean Beach <a href=\"https:\/\/obrag.org\/2025\/01\/community-leaders-rally-to-save-historic-ocean-beach-landmark\/comment-page-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">property<\/a> at 1984 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. It was threatened with replacement by affordable housing, so the group\u00a0offered instead to preserve the site as a community hub.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Builder of Ocean Beach Pier dead at 97<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leonard Edward Teyssier, the builder of <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/life\/2025\/05\/14\/builder-of-ocean-beach-pier-leonard-teyssier-has-died-at-97\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ocean Beach Pier<\/a> whose work helped define the region\u2019s mid-century growth, died on April 11 at age 97.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lighthouse Ice Cream reopens in Ocean Beach<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The long-awaited reopening of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lighthouseicecreamob.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ice cream shop<\/a> happened May 10, after a fire two years ago damaged the iconic spot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peninsula Beacon joins Times of San Diego and NEWSWELL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In May, San Diego Community Newspaper Group became part of <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/business\/2024\/06\/06\/times-of-san-diego-joins-arizona-state-university-nonprofit-to-develop-new-model-for-local-journalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NEWSWELL and Times of San Diego.<\/a> NEWSWELL, a nonprofit based at Arizona State University, was founded to build innovative solutions that help local newsrooms and communities thrive. It also operates Times of San Diego. A month later, San Diego Community Newspaper Group closed its Pacific Beach office and moved its staff to the Times of San Diego office in Bankers Hill. A few months later, veteran journalist Andrew Keatts was tapped to lead Times of San Diego and the newspapers as general manager and editor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yoga can return to the coast<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s back to the beaches and shoreline parks for yoga classes, as a federal appeals court on June 4 struck down the city\u2019s ban on free yoga taught in public outdoor spaces. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals found that <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/politics\/2025\/09\/30\/san-diego-beach-yoga-ban-rejct-court-ruling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teaching yoga<\/a> is protected speech under the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>County\u2019s grant saves beach fire rings <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With beach fire rings about to fall to the city\u2019s budget axe in June, the county stepped in to provide a <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/politics\/2025\/06\/17\/countys-135000-grant-saves-beach-fire-rings-for-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$135,000 grant<\/a>\u00a0to fund their maintenance for the next fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SDPD says progress is slow on enforcing oversized vehicles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The San Diego Police Department told the public in September that <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/life\/2025\/08\/25\/sdpd-says-progress-slow-on-enforcing-oversized-vehicles-in-coastal-areas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slow but incremental progress<\/a> is being made on enforcing ordinances on oversized vehicles and vehicle habitation in beach and bay neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>San Diego advances vacation rental tax<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>In October, San Diego officials took a step toward <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/22\/san-diego-vacation-rental-tax-tourism-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">implementing a tax<\/a> on vacation rentals and second homes.
