{"id":477677,"date":"2025-12-29T13:13:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T13:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/477677\/"},"modified":"2025-12-29T13:13:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T13:13:17","slug":"dangerous-lake-effect-snowstorm-could-drop-2-to-3-feet-in-upstate-ny-high-winds-could-make-driving-impossible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/477677\/","title":{"rendered":"Dangerous lake effect snowstorm could drop 2 to 3 feet in Upstate NY; high winds could make driving \u2018impossible\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZNDCJIRZDJBBVBCC57BLYRS2TA\">Syracuse, N.Y. &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/weather\/2025\/12\/upstate-nys-winter-whiplash-first-rain-then-ice-and-high-winds-topped-with-more-snow-by-new-years-eve.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/weather\/2025\/12\/upstate-nys-winter-whiplash-first-rain-then-ice-and-high-winds-topped-with-more-snow-by-new-years-eve.html\">Central and Western New York are expected to get slammed<\/a> with lake effect snow today through New Year\u2019s Eve, piling up to 2 or 3 feet in some spots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MSDBCJBBZZB3FKLUPYMYBU2LWQ\">The snow will be intense, coming down at 1 to 2 inches an hour at some points, amid wind gusts of up to 50 mph in Central New York and 75 mph in the North Country. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E66PD7HLJBATXEGOAHNJM64OPI\">\u201cTravel could be very difficult to impossible\u201d in much of the region, the National Weather Service <a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/product.php?site=NWS&amp;issuedby=BGM&amp;product=AFD&amp;format=CI&amp;version=1&amp;glossary=1&amp;highlight=off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/product.php?site=NWS&amp;issuedby=BGM&amp;product=AFD&amp;format=CI&amp;version=1&amp;glossary=1&amp;highlight=off\">said<\/a>. \u201cAreas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6AEHXLISYVGCRAX35BH3PAGLSY\">The snowfall is expected to begin in earnest after dark tonight. Tuesday could be a real mess as the snow ramps up, falling heavily throughout the day and potentially snarling both the morning and evening commutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7CRBZTBDYVEKTE3U4ZOB7D3TWY\">In Syracuse, 18 inches of snow could pile up by Wednesday morning, with a foot of that expected in just 12 hours, from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6CN5HPQFV5ESVASPDPLT6U326M\">Areas of the Tug Hill plateau could get 3 feet of snow, especially south of Watertown and Fort Drum. Winds there could reach a hurricane-force 75 mph, the weather service said, blowing down trees and power lines, and making driving all but impossible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WTSQHMWTENFL7IQDXVVBE2PUSM\">\u201cWhiteout conditions are expected starting this afternoon and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening,\u201d the weather service warned. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JYGPCCR7YRBNZKRGBWAVWQNLVI\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/weather\/2025\/12\/8-to-14-inches-of-lake-effect-snow-is-forecast-for-central-ny-starting-monday.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/weather\/2025\/12\/8-to-14-inches-of-lake-effect-snow-is-forecast-for-central-ny-starting-monday.html\">Winter storm warnings<\/a>, the highest level of winter alert, are in place for counties downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QE66OPGHMRDXTKSYTF6TKK46V4\">Snow is expected to begin this morning in Western New York and this afternoon in Central New York. It could last through Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ARIAMO5BFJF75IMR4NEDPEVWMI\">The fierce winds could uproot trees sitting in soil softened by recent rain and snowmelt. In an unusual warning, <a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/wwamap\/wwatxtget.php?cwa=BUF&amp;wwa=high%20wind%20warning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/wwamap\/wwatxtget.php?cwa=BUF&amp;wwa=high%20wind%20warning\">the weather service\u2019s <\/a>Buffalo office urged people to \u201cavoid being outside in forested areas and around trees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V4QNTAIAUNCAXIZZY6ERNZJOQM\">Like all lake effect snowstorms, forecasting exact amounts is tricky because the snow bands are narrow and tend to wobble throughout the storm. The highest snow totals come where fickle bands of snow hover for hours. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S6WNBMCMRRHG3F72A5OOQBVKZY\">The storm comes on top of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/news\/2025\/12\/who-got-the-most-snow-check-totals-for-central-ny-upstate-ny.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/news\/2025\/12\/who-got-the-most-snow-check-totals-for-central-ny-upstate-ny.html\">the 6 to 10 inches that fell <\/a>across parts of Upstate Friday night and the freezing rain that coated roads overnight Sunday.
