The Warner Bros. tentpole is the latest superhero movie from \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d and \u201cSuicide Squad\u201d writer-director Gunn, who is now overseeing DC Studios with Peter Safran. \u201cSuperman\u201d marks the launch of a rebooted DC Universe on the big screen. Film press are calling it a \u201cthrilling start\u201d to Gunn\u2019s DC Studios. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFilm critic Bryan Sudfield praised \u201cSuperman\u201d as a \u201cbold yet faithful\u201d feature adaptation of the DC icon. He added that Gunn\u2019s take felt unique while still staying true to the character\u2019s roots. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c\u2018Superman\u2019 soars with heart, humor, and style\u2014a bold yet faithful take on the iconic hero,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BryanSudfield\/status\/1942435983749697573\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">he wrote<\/a> on X. \u201cJames Gunn sets a fresh tone while honoring the character\u2019s legacy, and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/david-corenswet\/\" id=\"auto-tag_david-corenswet\" data-tag=\"david-corenswet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Corenswet<\/a> shines with sincerity and strength. A promising, thrilling start to DC\u2019s new era.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEntertainment journalist Brandon Davis took to X to praise David Corenswet\u2019s performance as the titular Man of Steel, adding that his chemistry with <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/rachel-brosnahan\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rachel-brosnahan\" data-tag=\"rachel-brosnahan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rachel Brosnahan<\/a> was \u201can excellent driver\u201d of the story. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDavid Corenswet portrays an exceptional iteration of [Superman] with sincerity, heroism, purity, and inspirational traits,\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BrandonDavisBD\/status\/1942434771772269010\">he wrote<\/a>. \u201cCorenswet &amp; Rachel Brosnahan\u2019s chemistry for Clark and Lois is off the charts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHowever, not everyone was a fan of the DC Studio debut. Movie critic Peter Howell said \u201cSuperman\u201d was \u201cnot the super start to the DC Universe everybody had been hoping for,\u201d and that it prioritized style over substance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cJames Gunn is brilliant at conjuring spectacle and creating alien realms, not so great at storytelling,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/peterhowellfilm\/status\/1942435821438554354\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">he wrote on X<\/a>. \u201cDavid Corenswet plays a boyishly sweet Superman, constantly getting his ass kicked; he\u2019d be better as the lead in a Dudley Do-Right movie. Rachel Brosnahan makes a spiky Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult\u2019s Lex Luthor is more obnoxious than villainous. The real star of the show is superdog Krypto, who steals every scene he\u2019s in \u2014 I\u2019d rather see a movie about him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSuperman\u201d stars Corenswet in the title role, plus Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The supporting cast includes Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Nathan Fillon (Guy Gardner), Isabela Mercad (Hawkgirl) and more. While plot specifics for the movie have remained under wraps, Gunn has said his superhero epic encompasses <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/james-gunn-superman-immigrant-politics-david-corenswet-1236448157\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cthe story of America.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI mean, \u2018Superman\u2019 is the story of America,\u201d Gunn explained to The Sunday Times. \u201cAn immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost\u2026 Yes, it\u2019s about politics. But on another level it\u2019s about morality. Do you never kill no matter what \u2014 which is what Superman believes \u2014 or do you have some balance, as Lois believes?
