I felt it. I knew it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UWATSP4YYFDGDNGT5O4UDSDVTU\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/atrial-fibrillation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/atrial-fibrillation\">Atrial fibrillation (AFib<\/a>) is an irregular, rapid heart rate. AFib causes the heart\u2019s upper chambers to beat erratically and out of sync with the lower chambers, which can lead to poor blood flow, according to the American Heart Association.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BTU2MMQCYFGDTCUXWNKS7TZB7Y\">The condition is informally known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laspalmasdelsolhealthcare.com\/healthy-living\/blog\/recognize-holiday-heart-symptoms-to-stay-healthy-during-the-holidays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.laspalmasdelsolhealthcare.com\/healthy-living\/blog\/recognize-holiday-heart-symptoms-to-stay-healthy-during-the-holidays\">\u201choliday heart syndrome\u201d<\/a> because it can be triggered by binge drinking, stress, overeating or dehydration common during the holidays, as well as factors like those that affected Feingold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MT5CZFLCJVD53BTBL3L2H7TRO4\">His AFib episode was treated with a cardioversion \u2014 a controlled electrical shock to reset his heart. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DGNDE5JD45HBJG5LKITG5DSH6M\">\u201cThank God,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AHZCU6ZTBJFRZDCGE7XMA564RA\">\u201cI haven\u2019t had atrial fib in 15 years,\u201d Feingold added. \u201cBut it was caused by the same mechanism that causes \u2018holiday heart\u2019: toxins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XEXP6CYLKZEZ5I3U77RJJFEGK4\">While New Jersey doesn\u2019t track AFib-specific data, the national picture is sobering: AFib affects an estimated 10.5 million Americans and contributes to <a href=\"https:\/\/search.cdc.gov\/search\/?query=Atrial%20fibrillation%20cases%20by%20state&amp;dpage=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/search.cdc.gov\/search\/?query=Atrial%20fibrillation%20cases%20by%20state&amp;dpage=1\">more than 232,000 deaths,<\/a> annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R53LC53PGVAZHAPMABGXAHFDSI\">Black and brown individuals have a lower overall incidence of AFib than white individuals, despite a higher incidence of risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes, according to the National Institutes of Health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XYSFT4XQ7RE3ZGCPZ6YYQJHDII\">Yet when AFib does occur, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12173103\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12173103\/\">research indicates <\/a>that people of color experience significantly worse outcomes, including nearly double the rates of stroke, heart failure, and death. Contributing factors may include disparities in health care access, diagnosis and socioeconomic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>What \u2018holiday heart\u2019 means<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IEP3RGDIGFDAHKRC74KF3G667Q\">Feingold, a longtime cardiologist and chief of cardiology at Hackensack Meridian JFK in Edison, said his experience is a reminder of how far cardiac care has come and how vulnerable people still are to preventable triggers. He offers realistic tips to stave off cardiac events during the holiday season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"226HV53XIVHPPD2Q5Q6275757Q\">The term may sound lighthearted, but Feingold said \u201choliday heart\u201d can be dangerous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"H5G4KG2JYRBJ3HLNVU5Z2TTXWE\">\u201cIt\u2019s a colloquial way of expressing a toxic episode that occurs with the heart,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CM52GAZQV5HCZPCFEFLI2I6JRU\">Most cases, he said, involve people who don\u2019t drink regularly but take a large amount of alcohol during the holidays triggering atrial fibrillation \u2014 an irregular heartbeat that can lead to stroke.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CV3J2AAV6VFWLFVW5362PG5QUY\">\u201cIf there\u2019s a clot in there, it goes forward into your head,\u201d Feingold said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2V2NOVMUOVHGLASTJOTNTEJU6I\">Doctors now typically start patients on blood thinners immediately to prevent that risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S7OOEE5ZSNFPDMFU63GGHUJLG4\">He said alcohol isn\u2019t the only culprit. Heavy holiday foods, especially salty dishes, which pull fluid into the heart, can also trigger symptoms. <\/p>\n<p>His holiday advice: Moderation<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4PPHBQBCSFC4VNUMYCGLX2YGBI\">As the season approaches, patients often tell him they can\u2019t control their eating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ME4IXUS33JCAJHGLSOKTNP2TEI\">\u201cThey say, \u2018Doc, the holidays are coming,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI say to them, there\u2019s Thanksgiving, there\u2019s Christmas Eve, Christmas, maybe New Year\u2019s. That\u2019s four days. That\u2019s no excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MKBWILEW4JF3BIMRAHLCGKDUCU\">He said holiday food stirs emotions for many people, bringing us back to our childhood and to our ethnic backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N4CBYJGSSBANRIM2YQZJCWDKD4\">But he urges small portions, lighter swaps, alternating alcoholic drinks with water, and eating something before drinking to help slow absorption. For those who insist on dessert, he suggests, \u201cHave a bite or two. That\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R4IPLC7CTZGL3CJSAQ4QEBAF2Y\">He also urges people to move around \u2014 take a short walk \u2014 and pay attention to symptoms. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KT7ZGSLFBZDLRJYJWBPXHDQ6IM\">\u201cIf you feel fluttering in the chest or any discomfort, immediately stop,\u201d he said. \u201cIf it persists, call a doctor or head to the ER.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heart care has evolved<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C2F5OESKLRG2BISUJKYFNAYJ3Q\">Feingold said the good news is that the treatment of heart conditions has evolved since he entered cardiology 43 years ago when options were drastically limited. He said when a patient came in with a heart attack, you sat by their bed, and you gave morphine and maybe some nitroglycerin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AIWYIGSP4BD6BAIIA6MPXSGPNQ\">\u201cThey either died or lived\u201d he said. \u201cYou didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZR7B2CRYC5DKJAUVYHFJLYUKMM\">If a patient survived, he said treatment options were limited and only the wealthy had access to bypass surgery in either Texas or New York, which had hospitals offering the latest in heart care technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PI5EOUSN7BGJTISS4LXSBZAZCY\">Today, the landscape is unrecognizable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WNLALIZ27BAJLN4YNC6DW3XJ64\">\u201cNow you come in with a heart attack, we give drugs that prevent worsening of the heart attack,\u201d he said. \u201cWe put new heart valves in from the skin. We put defibrillators in. Heart disease has become a chronic disease and not an acute killer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SAXGIAFB5RFSPPTKF46FK4HYB4\">He also noted that early pacemakers were the size of a deck of cards and sometimes had to be recharged through the skin, which could cause the skin to heat up or even burn. Today, he said, pacemakers are about the size of a half dollar \u2014 or even smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Modern monitoring tools<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B7KU5RMEAFG6JOUSATDD4E2VSE\">Thanks to new technology, patients can now monitor their own rhythm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7MXSAKI4FNFTVI4JNXS4UBON3M\">\u201cThe new Apple watches actually give you a printout,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IADE6JB7FZBQLOWHH6TTQN5IC4\">A small device called Kardia also works, but he cautions that risk still depends on the individual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5DXDXGZ3IVHJPMJCOUX5ABD4QU\">\u201cSomeone older with hypertension or diabetes needs more urgent evaluation than a 20-year-old with no cardiac history,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"H65E3EU6RNA3TAQD34M3DAFIZI\">Feingold has seen the long-term effects of alcohol too. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RC6OOTV4UJB3LGHJAHNTQG6UE4\">While holiday heart is temporary, chronic heavy drinking can weaken the heart muscle itself, causing cardiomyopathy \u2014 the deterioration of the middle muscular layer of the heart wall responsible for the heart\u2019s contraction and relaxation.
