Rebecca Gayheart is ending 2025 with a revealing look at her estranged husband, Eric Dane, and how their relationship has evolved because of his battle with ALS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 54-year-old actress wrote a raw and emotional first-person essay<\/a> for The Cut on December 29 and broke her silence about their \u201ccomplicated\u201d love story.<\/a> Gayheart explained that after meeting in 2003 and marrying in 2004, \u201ctheir really lovely marriage\u201d took a turn after 15 years.<\/p>\n

She noted that \u201clots of s\u2014t went crazy in our relationship, and it wasn\u2019t good. We separated, but we never got a divorce; we were about to, and then we didn\u2019t.\u201d They \u201chaven\u2019t lived in the same home for eight years; he\u2019s dated other people<\/a>,\u201d while she dated one person. Overall, it\u2019s a hard relationship to define, even though they are still married after she withdrew her 2018 divorce petition in March 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a very complicated relationship, one that\u2019s confusing for people,\u201d Gayheart wrote. \u201cOur love may not be romantic, but it\u2019s a familial love. Eric knows that I am always going to want the best for him. That I\u2019m going to do my best to do right by him.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former duo share two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, and she wants to make sure to \u201cshow up\u201d for their dad during the hardest time in his life.<\/p>\n

The Grey\u2019s Anatomy alum revealed to <\/a>People<\/a> in April that he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), aka Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease. ALS is \u201ca progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord,\u201d per the ALS Association<\/a>. There is currently no cure for the disease, with the average survival rate around two to five years after diagnosis.<\/p>\n

Gayheart spoke to People<\/a> in September and gave an honest answer for how their unique family was doing \u2014 and it was an emotionally raw place.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019m at a place yet where I can pull out a positive nugget. I\u2019m not there yet,\u201d she confided. \u201cI mean, we\u2019re definitely dealing with something that has brought us all together, and Eric will always be my family, whether we\u2019re married or not, or living in the same house or not, but yeah, we are closer, but we don\u2019t like the reason why.\u201d<\/p>\n
