Experts say that keeping the Earth below that limit could <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-change-warming-hot-record-2024-disasters-12f899f071fcdbd051ad49a872611e92\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">save lives and prevent catastrophic environmental destruction<\/a> around the globe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The analysis from World Weather Attribution researchers, released Tuesday in Europe, came after a year when <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/photo-gallery\/climate-change-environment-weather-photos-2025-6981b6aff56a36e054b85bbb76d1d449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">people around the world were slammed<\/a> by the dangerous extremes brought on by a warming planet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Temperatures remained high despite the presence of a La Nina, the occasional natural cooling of Pacific Ocean waters that influences weather worldwide. Researchers cited the continued burning of fossil fuels \u2014 oil, gas and coal \u2014 that send planet-warming greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIf we don\u2019t stop burning fossil fuels very, very, quickly, very soon, it will be very hard to keep that goal\u201d of warming, Friederike Otto, co-founder of World Weather Attribution and an Imperial College London climate scientist, told The Associated Press. \u201cThe science is increasingly clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Extreme weather events kill thousands of people and cost billions of dollars in damage annually.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">WWA scientists identified 157 extreme weather events as most severe in 2025, meaning they met criteria such as causing more than 100 deaths, affecting more than half an area\u2019s population or having a state of emergency declared. Of those, they closely analyzed 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">That included <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/heat-wave-eastern-central-united-states-advisories-d7b93e295c42cdb4787cf95c1f09858b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dangerous heat waves<\/a>, which the WWA said were the world&#8217;s deadliest extreme weather events in 2025. The researchers said some of the heat waves they studied in 2025 were 10 times more likely than they would have been a decade ago due to climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThe heat waves we have observed this year are quite common events in our climate today, but they would have been almost impossible to occur without human-induced climate change,\u201d Otto said. \u201cIt makes a huge difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Meanwhile, prolonged drought contributed to <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/greece-turkey-wildfires-crete-tourists-5bff42d78ccd762fc69d4e95e4b22c38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wildfires that scorched Greece and Turkey<\/a>. <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mexico-flooding-severe-weather-climate-change-b2b37cbfb1d22dd782976a6c392ecf91\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Torrential rains and flooding in Mexico<\/a> killed dozens of people and left many more missing. Super Typhoon Fung-wong <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/super-typhoon-fungwong-philippines-kalmaegi-evacuations-4c56c28db715e11af779e04893128c63\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slammed the Philippines<\/a>, forcing more than a million people to evacuate. <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/india-rainfall-climate-floods-punjab-delhi-himalayas-455c0b2c73103610280f12ba15d8ae24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monsoon rains<\/a> battered India with floods and landslides. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The WWA said the increasingly frequent and severe extremes threatened the ability of millions of people across the globe to respond and adapt to those events with enough warning, time and resources, what the scientists call \u201climits of adaptation.\u201d The report pointed to Hurricane Melissa as an example: The storm <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hurricane-melissa-jamaica-cuba-landslide-rain-flood-d7d120b8443b1630d12c77e0a3fe25b0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intensified so quickly<\/a> that it made forecasting and planning more difficult, and <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hurricane-melissa-cuba-jamaica-flooding-winds-275a4d2d41a0ff3f382053865eefe295\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pummeled Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti<\/a> so severely that it left the small island nations unable to respond to and handle its extreme losses and damage. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">This year&#8217;s United Nations climate talks in Brazil in November ended without any explicit plan to <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cop30-climate-change-brazil-fossil-fuels-f41d0dac0553825bdbe1fba5ac31ed90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transition away from fossil fuels<\/a>, and though more money was pledged to help countries adapt to climate change, they will take more time to do it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \"><a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/un-cop30-climate-talks-belem-brazil-c387cf773ece4c60cd6039be1ffb70ef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Officials, scientists, and analysts<\/a> have conceded that <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/climate-and-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth\u2019s warming<\/a> will overshoot <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-science-business-scotland-europe-7b282af7df95b55dff2630e158631a73\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1.5 degrees<\/a> Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit), though some say reversing that trend remains possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Yet different nations are seeing varying levels of progress. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">China is <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-climate-2035-un-ndc-goals-c5e1db2dec473b5ca3763bc4c5c6e5cb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rapidly deploying renewable energies<\/a> including solar and wind power \u2014 but it is also continuing to invest in coal. Though increasingly frequent extreme weather has spurred calls for climate action across Europe, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-emissions-european-union-cop30-a1a911e28cb9aa658b5b1e9fddc91935\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some nations say that limits economic growth<\/a>. Meanwhile, in the U.S., the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-un-climate-change-renewable-energy-5c033a24ec523a56f8244d85f3672eda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump administration has steered the nation away<\/a> from clean-energy policy in favor of measures that support coal, oil and gas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThe geopolitical weather is very cloudy this year with a lot of policymakers very clearly making policies for the interest of the fossil fuel industry rather than for the populations of their countries,&#8221; Otto said. \u201cAnd we have a huge amount of mis- and disinformation that people have to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Andrew Kruczkiewicz, a senior researcher at the Columbia University Climate School who wasn&#8217;t involved in the WWA work, said places are seeing disasters they aren&#8217;t used to, extreme events are intensifying faster and they are becoming more complex.
