Grimes<\/a> criticized her ex-partner Elon Musk\u2019s<\/a> social media platform, X, as toxic in a Monday post<\/a> on that platform.<\/p>\n

\u201cOk I\u2019ve basically been entirely off social media and returning here it is [overwhelmingly] abundantly and profoundly clear that this place \u2013 and all of these places \u2013 are a poison \u2013 a prison of utterly short form deep sounding nonsense attached to no one that ur brain will discard imaging its learning,\u201d the \u201cOblivion\u201d singer wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe entire thing is a theatre,\u201d she went on. \u201cA shitty pale simulacra of a life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grimes, born Claire Elise Boucher, spoke out about the harmful effects of social media in another post back in April<\/a>, writing, \u201cI think it\u2019s very unhealthy to be on social media.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels like a ghost town of depression, bitterness and pictures of beautiful women doing sext [sic] things,\u201d she continued. \u201cI feel like this is a massive moral failure of all the apps. And it\u2019s causing great harm to society.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Canadian artist\u2019s former partner, Musk, officially took control of X in October 2022, four years after their relationship began through conversations on the app. The pair share three children and broke up in March 2022.<\/p>\n

Following Musk\u2019s acquisition of X, the tech billionaire and self-described \u201cfree speech absolutist\u201d got rid of a majority of the platform\u2019s content moderation teams and reinstated a slew of accounts that had previously been banned for hate speech or spreading misinformation.<\/p>\n

In January, Callum Hood, the head of research at the Center for Countering Digital Hate, told The Guardian<\/a> that \u201caccounts on X are very deliberately posting the most naked hate and disinformation possible\u201d in order to exploit those \u201ccash incentives.\u201d<\/p>\n
