{"id":48038,"date":"2025-07-08T06:54:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T06:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/48038\/"},"modified":"2025-07-08T06:54:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T06:54:13","slug":"school-of-music-to-be-absorbed-by-another-department-as-australian-national-university-undergoes-major-restructure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/48038\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Music to be absorbed by another department as Australian National University undergoes major restructure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In Oliver Djurkovic&#8217;s mind, the Australian National University&#8217;s (ANU) latest pitch to curb spending \u2014 which would see the institution&#8217;s well-respected School of Music scrapped \u2014 defies logic.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Getting rid of one-on-one instrumental lessons at a music school defies any logic of how a music school should operate,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  the Masters of Music student and saxophone player said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ANU has been on a months-long hunt for savings after it was revealed last October it was staring down a projected $200 million deficit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Vice-chancellor Genevieve Bell said then that a major restructure in an effort to save $250 million in spending would lead to a &#8220;smaller university&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The latest proposal towards achieving that goal is for the School of Music to be relegated to &#8220;programme&#8221; status and absorbed into a new School of Creative and Cultural Practice, with a revised Bachelor of Music to replace the traditional one-to-one instrument model.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Seven positions \u2014 five of which are currently filled \u2014 focused on performance, composition, theory and musicology, would go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Music production, technology and Indigenous music would instead be prioritised.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The sign for School of Music adorns a concrete building, winter trees in the foreground.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ae4d2e88d39a0c8043b5dfc12389e7de\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The School of Music would have a shifted focus under the plan, including a move away from one-on-one instrument lessons. (Supplied: Peter Hislop)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Peter Tregear, a former head of the School of Music, was unequivocal that the plan should not go ahead and the School of Music, which is 60 years old, should remain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He also questioned the effectiveness of the proposed new teaching model.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I think you&#8217;ve got some difficulty,&#8221; Mr Tregear said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m certainly not opposed to the idea that we need to think more creatively around the types of teaching models that have been traditionally associated with an apprentice-master model of practical music education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;However, we need to be pretty aware, too, that some of the motivations \u2014 if not largely the motivation \u2014 for pushing in this direction away from that are not pedagogical, they&#8217;re economic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They&#8217;re to do with the fact that that model of teaching is expensive to deliver.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Tregear said it was important not to ignore the &#8220;elephant in the room&#8221; \u2014 the Nixon Report, an independent review into gender and cultural issues at the university&#8217;s College of Health and Medicine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was sparked by reports of harm from staff and students, and found harassment and bullying were &#8220;widespread practices&#8221;, with little or no consequences.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The sign for the School of Music is seen on the side of the building, blue sky beyond.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/6b94fbdf2b27f6e239044fa60a477bde\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The School of Music has existed for 60 years, but will be absorbed into another department under the draft changes.
