{"id":480624,"date":"2025-12-30T18:40:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-30T18:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/480624\/"},"modified":"2025-12-30T18:40:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-30T18:40:11","slug":"northwestern-hires-former-ohio-state-offensive-coordinator-chip-kelly-to-lead-offense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/480624\/","title":{"rendered":"Northwestern Hires Former Ohio State Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly to Lead Offense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tChip Kelly is returning to the Big Ten, but not to Ohio State.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tNorthwestern has hired the former Ohio State offensive coordinator as its new offensive coordinator, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/47453000\/sources-northwestern-hiring-veteran-coach-chip-kelly-oc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESPN\u2019s Pete Thamel<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tKelly, who helped lead Ohio State to a national championship in 2024 as the Buckeyes\u2019 offensive coordinator, left Ohio State after one season to become the Las Vegas Raiders\u2019 offensive coordinator, but was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elevenwarriors.com\/ohio-state-football\/2025\/11\/159762\/las-vegas-raiders-fire-chip-kelly-after-11-games-as-offensive-coordinator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fired by the Raiders<\/a> after just 11 games.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhen South Florida <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elevenwarriors.com\/ohio-state-football\/2025\/12\/160108\/south-florida-reportedly-hiring-ohio-state-offensive-coordinator-brian-hartline-as-new-head-coach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hired current Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline<\/a> as its new head coach earlier this month, there was immediate speculation that Kelly could return to Ohio State as OC. His landing at Northwestern, however, suggests a reunion with the Buckeyes was never in the cards. Kelly also reportedly interviewed for\u00a0Georgia Tech and North Carolina\u2019s\u00a0offensive coordinator vacancies, per <a href=\"http:\/\/x.com\/PeteNakos\/status\/2005962744755888254\">On3\u2019s Pete Nakos<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt\u2019s still expected that Ryan Day will hire an experienced offensive coordinator to call plays for the Buckeyes in 2026. For the rest of the current season, Day is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elevenwarriors.com\/ohio-state-football\/2025\/12\/160604\/ryan-day-taking-over-play-calling-as-brian-hartline-balances-upcoming-head-coaching-role-with-wide-receiver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taking over play calling<\/a> for the College Football Playoff, though Hartline will remain on staff as wide receivers coach through the end of Ohio State\u2019s CFP run.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-box\">\n\t<strong>RELATED<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elevenwarriors.com\/ohio-state-football\/2025-26-college-football-playoff\/2025\/12\/160700\/we-re-focusing-on-the-buckeyes-brian-hartline-says-ohio-state-s-cfp-run-is-front\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cWe\u2019re Focusing On the Buckeyes\u201d: Brian Hartline Says Ohio State\u2019s CFP Run is \u201cFront of My Mind\u201d As He Navigates Postseason As USF\u2019s Head Coach<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFor Northwestern, though, landing Kelly is a splashy hire as the Wildcats look to elevate an offense that ranked just 14th of 18 Big Ten teams with 23.4 points per game this season.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBefore his one-year stints with the Raiders and Buckeyes, Kelly was the head coach at UCLA from 2018-23. He was previously the head coach of the NFL\u2019s San Francisco 49ers in 2016 and Philadelphia Eagles from 2013-15. Kelly was previously the head coach (2009-12) and offensive coordinator (2007-08) at Oregon, where he became known as one of college football\u2019s most innovative offensive minds. Before that, Kelly was a longtime assistant at New Hampshire \u2013 his alma mater \u2013 where he coached\u00a0Day during his own playing career.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tKelly replaces Zach Lujan, Northwestern\u2019s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the past two years, whose contract is not being renewed.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBoth of Ohio State\u2019s coordinators from its 2024 national championship team have now already changed jobs twice in less than a year. Jim Knowles, who left Ohio State after last season to become the new defensive coordinator at Penn State, became the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elevenwarriors.com\/college-football\/2025\/12\/160380\/tennessee-set-to-hire-current-penn-state-former-ohio-state-defensive-coordinator-jim-knowles-as-dc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new defensive coordinator at Tennessee<\/a> earlier this month; new Penn State head coach Matt Campbell reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6899760\/2025\/12\/29\/danton-lynn-penn-state-usc-defensive-coordinator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hired D\u2019Anton Lynn away from USC<\/a> on Monday\u00a0to be Penn State\u2019s new DC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Chip Kelly is returning to the Big Ten, but not to Ohio State.
