He was 71.<\/p>\n<p>Whitlock\u2019s manager, Brian Liebman, shared news of his client\u2019s death in an <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DS5za6eEdp2\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a> post on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Whitlock Jr.,\u201d Liebman wrote. \u201cIf you knew him \u2014 you loved him. A brilliant actor and even better person. May his memory forever be a blessing. Our hearts are so broken. He will be very, very missed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liebman told <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/12\/isiah-whitlock-jr-dead-the-wire-spike-lee-movies-1236658855\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deadline<\/a> that Whitlock died peacefully in New York after a short illness.<\/p>\n<p>Born in South Bend, Ind., Whitlock  had dreams of playing pro football. He <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/01\/19\/958426293\/isaiah-whitlock-jr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told NPR<\/a> in 2021 that, while playing at Southwest Minnesota State University, he got \u201cbanged up &#8230; concussions, broken ankles.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me it just didn\u2019t seem to make sense anymore. &#8230; I wandered by the theater department.\u201d After nabbing a role in \u201cThe Crucible,\u201d he said he\u2019d been \u201cworking ever since.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>After graduating in 1976, Whitlock joined the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of his career, the actor picked up  roles in procedurals and dramas, including iterations of the \u201cLaw &amp; Order\u201d franchise, notably \u201cLaw &amp; Order: Special Victims Unit\u201d and \u201cLaw &amp; Order: Criminal Intent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He most famously left his mark on HBO\u2019s \u201cThe Wire\u201d as corrupt Maryland State Sen. Clay Davis, whose <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@hbomaxau\/video\/7529086544985083143?_r=1&amp;_t=ZP-92fMeiMfU0E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drawn-out<\/a>, drawled <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2021-01-05\/netflix-history-of-swear-words-nicolas-cage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">profanity<\/a>, \u201cs\u2014,\u201d became a memorable element of the 60-episode crime drama. <\/p>\n<p>After brief appearances on multiple short-lived TV series, including Fox\u2019s \u201cNew Amsterdam,\u201d ABC\u2019s \u201cThe Unusuals,\u201d CBS\u2019 \u201cChaos,\u201d and others, Whitlock made his HBO return with a recurring role on the political satire \u201cVeep\u201d as George Maddox, the secretary of defense and presidential candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Whitlock also appeared on CBS shows \u201cThe Good Wife,\u201d \u201cElementary,\u201d FX\u2019s \u201cLouie,\u201d \u201cAtlanta,\u201d Fox\u2019s \u201cGotham,\u201d NBC\u2019s \u201cThe Carmichael Show\u201d among many more. His final TV role was as Chief of Police Larry Dokes in Netflix\u2019s 2025 mystery comedy drama \u201cThe Residence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the big screen, Whitlock appeared in the black comedy horror film \u201cCocaine Bear\u201d in 2023, as well as multiple movies directed by Lee, including \u201cShe Hate Me\u201d (2004), \u201cChi-Raq\u201d (2015), \u201cBlacKkKlansman\u201d (2018) and \u201cDa 5 Bloods\u201d (2020). <\/p>\n<p>The director shared a photo of the two on his <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DS6CCU2jSsP\/?igsh=dnNhNW5leG90cmI1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram account<\/a>, writing, \u201cToday I learned of the passing of my dear beloved brother Isiah Whitlock.
