Walk-on Brock Thomas took over as UO’s backup, so Novosad departing like several of his teammates seems understandable, even amid the playoffs.

But at least for now, the redshirt sophomore is staying with the program as it prepares to face No. 4 Texas Tech in the Orange Bowl.

“I feel like I owe it to this team, I owe it to the coaching staff and myself,” Novosad said. “I put in a lot of hard work and I want to help this team out as much as I can. The portal opens Friday and closes Jan. 16. Should Oregon win and advance to the semifinals at the Peach Bowl on Jan. 9, it’s not clear whether Novosad would enter the portal immediately or wait, as doing so may prevent him from staying the team, based on how UO handles transferring players historically.

“It’s a tough spot,” Novosad said. “It’s all about the timing and what’s best for myself as well as the team. Got to see where it goes and play it day by day.”

A four-star recruit, Novosad was the No. 10 quarterback and No. 126 overall prospect in the class of 2023 and an Elite 11 finalist. He completed 64.5% of his passes for 8,983 yards with 114 touchdowns and 18 interceptions over three years at Dripping Springs (Texas) High School.

With outgoing offensive coordinator Will Stein becoming the head coach at Kentucky, there was natural speculation that Novosad might follow, though reports out of Lexington indicated that was unlikely.

While Novosad wouldn’t comment one way or the other about following Stein, he is awaiting options once they become formalized.

“I feel like once the portal opens, kind of see where that goes,” Novosad said. “I don’t know what I’m going to do right now.”

No. 4 Texas Tech (12-1) vs. No. 5 Oregon (12-1)

When: Thursday, January 1

Time: 9 a.m. PT

Where: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Fla.

TV: ESPN

Stream: You can watch this game on DIRECTV (free trial) or with Sling (a Sling day pass to watch this game and more is just $4.99).
