{"id":481715,"date":"2025-12-31T05:50:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T05:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/481715\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T05:50:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T05:50:13","slug":"fentanyl-detection-devices-distributed-on-chicagos-west-side","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/481715\/","title":{"rendered":"Fentanyl detection devices distributed on Chicago&#8217;s West Side"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/jhb5tyiwa8wcz7po.jpg\" alt=\"New Illinois law aims to better track overdoses\" class=\"sr-only\" data-v-4292be72=\"\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\"><strong>CHICAGO<\/strong> &#8211; With the start of the new year just hours away, a number of new laws are set to take effect.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">In Illinois, several pieces of legislation are aimed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox32chicago.com\/tag\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">improving public health<\/a>, including updates to how overdose data is collected and shared statewide.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WFLD\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">What we know:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">In 2026, suspected overdoses in Illinois will be pinpointed on a map as they happen \u2014 paving the way for officials to spot overdose trends faster and, hopefully, prevent them.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;This\u00a0gives us real-time information so that we can attack the problems where they&#8217;re at,&#8221; said State Rep. La Shawn Ford, D-8th District.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Under the EMS Systems Act, first responders will now be permitted to share overdose data with the state.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox32chicago.com\/news\/new-illinois-laws-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong>New Illinois laws taking effect in 2026 you&#8217;ll want to know about<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) will then provide that information to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.odmap.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program (ODMAP)<\/a>, which will identify hotspots across Illinois \u2014 helping officials zero in on areas where prevention work is needed most.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;This is a collaboration between federal, state, and local partners to fight the opioid crisis in America,&#8221; Ford said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Ford explains that this will expedite the release of overdose data, which is often delayed until autopsies are completed.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WFLD\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Dig deeper:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Some of that prevention work was underway ahead of New Year&#8217;s Eve on the city&#8217;s West Side.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">On Tuesday, the West Side Heroin\/Opioid Task Force, in coordination with Rep. Ford&#8217;s office, teamed up with a company called Defent to distribute free fentanyl detection systems.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;We&#8217;re working with different companies to bring in as many tools to prevent fatal overdoses on the West Side,&#8221; Ford said. &#8220;The West Side has been known to suffer from fatal overdoses more than other communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">By testing products before use with Defent&#8217;s fast-acting strips, the technology helps users avoid accidental fentanyl poisonings.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The co-founder of Defent shares that laced pills are one of the leading causes of overdoses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">&#8220;People&#8217;s guards are down when they&#8217;re consuming, in their mind, a pharmaceutical. But oftentimes, if you look at the DEA&#8217;s website, 60% of pills seized by the DEA, they are counterfeit pharmaceuticals, and about 60% of them are laced with fentanyl,&#8221; explained Ahmad Hussain, co-founder &amp; CEO, Defent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WFLD\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">What&#8217;s next:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Access to Narcan, a medication that reverses opioid overdoses, continues to expand across Illinois.
