WAYNE, New Jersey (WABC) — Police are investigating after at least one shot was fired inside Willowbrook Mall in Wayne, New Jersey on Tuesday, according to officials.<\/p>\n
Wayne Police officers responded after receiving reports that shots had been fired in the food court area of the mall just after 7 p.m.<\/p>\n
They determined that some form of physical altercation led to the shooting.<\/p>\n
State Troopers and police from more than a dozen nearby towns descended on the mall, blocked the parking lot entrances, refused to let people in and urged everyone to get out.<\/p>\n
“Everybody was like colliding over me, and I was like what’s going on? So I just started running with the crowd,” said Amirras Saint Paul, who evacuated the mall.<\/p>\n
Teens described panic and confusion as they ran from the mall after hearing what sounded like two gunshots.<\/p>\n
“The first shot people thought, like, it was a bottle cap or something, and once the second shot went off, that’s when everyone started really getting scared,” said Ellison Lucien, who also evacuated the mall.<\/p>\n
While state police could be heard warning people of an “active shooter” at the mall, Wayne Police emphasized that no one was hurt, and the situation was quickly placed under control.<\/p>\n
The teens Eyewitness News spoke with, managed to stay together, but said that seeing the officers with big guns as they left was as alarming as the people running inside.<\/p>\n
“I was shaking like crazy,” Saint Paul said.<\/p>\n
“I heard a bunch of footsteps and I was just getting pushed by a bunch of people as I was running,” Shane Garvey said.<\/p>\n
Wayne Police said they detained several people for questioning as they got the situation under control.<\/p>\n
They confirmed to Eyewitness News that there was at least one shot fired, but it’s not clear whether they recovered a weapon.<\/p>\n
