(Screenshot)<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Kanaka\u2018ole will lead the Department of Land and Natural Resources as acting chair while Chair Dawn Chang is on medical leave, Gov. Josh Green announced Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The designation is effective immediately. Kanaka\u2018ole serves as the department\u2019s deputy director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJaime and I send our heartfelt aloha to Dawn and her \u02bbohana as she recovers,\u201d Green said. \u201cDawn has been a dedicated steward of Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s lands, waters and wildlife and we wish her strength and a full recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Green said the department remains in good hands with the temporary transition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe brings steady leadership and a deep commitment to m\u0101lama \u02bb\u0101ina and community,\u201d Green said. \u201cThe department\u2019s work of protecting and managing Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s natural, historical and cultural resources will continue and we look forward to welcoming Dawn back when she is ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"769\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Ryan-Kanakaole-First-Deputy-scaled-1-769x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-511742\"\/>Ryan Kanaka\u2018ole, acting chair of the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The department\u2019s leadership, boards and commissions remain fully staffed. Scheduled meetings and hearings for the Board of Land and Natural Resources and the Commission on Water Resource Management will proceed as planned.<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The governor made the appointment under Hawai\u02bbi law, which allows for a temporary designation when department heads are unable to perform their duties. In that role, he represented the Hawai\u02bbi Housing Finance and Development Corp. and the Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority. He also served as a deputy attorney general for the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands from 2017 to 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Land and Natural Resources oversees nearly 1.3 million acres of state lands, beaches and coastal waters, as well as 750 miles of coastline.
