LONDON \u2014 European stocks opened mixed on the last trading day of the year. <\/p>\n
The pan-European Stoxx 600<\/a> index opened 0.1% lower on Wednesday.<\/p>\n The U.K.’s FTSE<\/a> index was trading less than 0.1% higher, France’s CAC 40<\/a>\u00a0was down 0.3% while Germany’s DAX<\/a> rose 0.6%, and Italy’s FTSE MIB<\/a> gained 1.1%.<\/p>\n Markets will only be open for a half-day of trading on Wednesday, and will be closed on Thursday for the New Year’s Day holiday before reopening on Friday.<\/p>\n Defense stocks were on the rise for a second day, with Saab<\/a>, Renk<\/a> and Rheinmetall<\/a> up between 2% and 3% shortly after market open. <\/p>\n Regional stocks extended gains to notch a fresh record high<\/a> on Tuesday, with the pan-European\u00a0Stoxx 600<\/a>\u00a0index closing 0.7% higher. <\/p>\n London-listed\u00a0Fresnillo<\/a>\u00a0was among the worst-performing stocks in the European blue-chip index early Wednesday, down 3.5% following a 6% jump Tuesday. Other mining stocks were also top performers in the previous trading session, with Anglo American<\/a>,\u00a0Antofagasta<\/a>, and\u00a0Glencore<\/a>\u00a0rising around 3% each, but were spared any big pullbacks Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n Precious metals, notably\u00a0gold<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0silver<\/a>, were also firmly in focus for investors during the holiday-shortened trading week. Silver futures retreated 8.1% while gold futures dropped 1.1% in early trading. <\/p>\n U.S. stock futures<\/a> were little changed Tuesday night, as Wall Street prepared to ring out the last day of 2025.
