{"id":482715,"date":"2025-12-31T16:02:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T16:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/482715\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T16:02:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T16:02:13","slug":"letters-to-the-editor-if-you-get-the-chance-to-take-a-flight-on-the-goodyear-blimp-take-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/482715\/","title":{"rendered":"Letters to the Editor: If you get the chance to take a flight on the Goodyear Blimp, take it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>  Dec. 31, 2025 5:30 AM PT  <\/p>\n<p><b>To the editor<\/b>: I have had the good fortune to have flown twice in the past 20 years on the Goodyear Blimp out of Carson, thanks to Goodyear\u2019s generosity at benefit auctions for deserving nonprofits (<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-12-27\/its-just-like-your-dopey-friend-inside-goodyear-blimps-devoted-fan-base\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201c\u2018It\u2019s just like your dopey friend\u2019: Inside the Goodyear Blimp\u2019s devoted fan base,\u201d<\/a> Dec. 27). It is one of the highlights of my life living in the L.A. area. It is so otherworldly and unusual; it\u2019s like nothing else I\u2019ve experienced.<\/p>\n<p>What they didn\u2019t tell me before arriving is how tricky it is to climb aboard. When the blimp lands, it\u2019s all hands on deck from the staff as they physically hold the blimp\u2019s ropes down while the participants catch the ladder and climb up. It\u2019s always moving, so you really have to watch what you are doing. Then, the blimp\u2019s rise seems to be straight up as the pilot gets to cruising altitude. It\u2019s an amazing view as the blimp \u201cputt putts\u201d along at a leisurely speed, giving you time to really study the ground\u2019s features.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot I had on my first flight had flown commercially and moved to Akron, Ohio, to work at the Goodyear factory, just so he could be first on the pilot replacement list.
