Irving, Plano, Farmers Branch and Highland Park have already scheduled withdrawal elections. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/transportation\/2025\/12\/02\/addison-dart-withdrawal-election-vote-results-undecided-public-transportation\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/transportation\/2025\/12\/02\/addison-dart-withdrawal-election-vote-results-undecided-public-transportation\/\">Addison considered an election<\/a> as well, but council members could not agree on the measure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Citing concerns about service and costs, and after advocating for legislation to change DART\u2019s funding and governance, city leaders across North Texas have decided to put membership in the agency to a vote. Plano is...\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Garland\u2019s council is also scheduled to be briefed next week on \u201congoing issues, constraints, and challenges\u201d related to DART, according to the city work session agenda. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">University Park, home to Southern Methodist University, has over 25,000 residents and contributed $6.9 million in sales tax to DART in the 2023 fiscal year, according to DART data. The suburb is one of 13 cities that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/transportation\/2025\/11\/22\/who-pays-for-public-transportation-in-north-texas-how-dart-is-funded-and-governed\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/transportation\/2025\/11\/22\/who-pays-for-public-transportation-in-north-texas-how-dart-is-funded-and-governed\/\">contributes sales tax<\/a> to the agency. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">DART provides on-demand service throughout University Park and Highland Park with the Park Cities GoLink zone, and connects riders to SMU\/Mockingbird Station, where they can access bus routes and DART Light Rail, according to the agency\u2019s website. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">DART\u2019s bus route 237 passes through University Park along Preston Road, and the agency also manages two site-specific SMU Express Shuttles, jointly funded by SMU and DART, to provide bus service on the university\u2019s main and east campuses, according to the agency.<\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"aspect-ratio:190 \/ 127\" class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-related-story-module__2UraD flex-none object-cover dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain dmnc_images-modern-image-module__P3kZ4 w-full\" width=\"190\" height=\"127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ZH2PMBJRAVAGPESHZWG5UZDKDQ.jpg\" alt=\"The new DART Silver Line makes its way to Addison Station for a ribbon cutting to mark its...\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">DART services in University Park would cease immediately if voters choose to leave the agency on May 2, but cities that withdraw would continue paying DART because there are still obligations to pay off debt associated with cities\u2019 contributions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Every six years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2025\/11\/05\/plano-voters-set-to-consider-leaving-dart-next-year-after-council-oks-withdrawal-election\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/elections\/2025\/11\/05\/plano-voters-set-to-consider-leaving-dart-next-year-after-council-oks-withdrawal-election\/\">DART\u2019s 13 member cities<\/a> can hold elections to withdraw from DART under state law.
