{"id":483925,"date":"2026-01-01T04:24:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-01T04:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/483925\/"},"modified":"2026-01-01T04:24:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-01T04:24:14","slug":"chief-justice-says-constitution-remains-firm-and-unshaken","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/483925\/","title":{"rendered":"Chief Justice says Constitution remains &#8216;firm and unshaken&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Chief Justice John Roberts said Wednesday that the Constitution remains a sturdy pillar for the country, a message that comes after a tumultuous year in the nation\u2019s judicial system with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/us-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pivotal Supreme Court decisions<\/a> on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts said the nation\u2019s founding documents remain \u201cfirm and unshaken,\u201d a reference to a century-old quote from President Calvin Coolidge. \u201cTrue then; true now,\u201d Roberts wrote in his annual letter to the judiciary.<\/p>\n<p>The letter comes after a year in which legal scholars and Democrats raised fears of a possible <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-presidential-power-executive-congress-grants-freeze-60fa3a9fabf6328f9aa3c45ed34e2cc3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">constitutional crisis<\/a> as Republican President Donald Trump\u2019s supporters pushed back against rulings that slowed his far-reaching conservative agenda.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-federal-judges-impeachment-29da1153a9f82106748098a6606fec39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roberts weighed in<\/a> at one point in March, issuing a rare rebuke after Trump called for the impeachment of a judge who had ruled against him in a case over the deportation of Venezuelan migrants accused of being gang members.<\/p>\n<p>The chief justice\u2019s Wednesday letter was largely focused on the nation\u2019s history, including an early 19th-century case establishing the principle that Congress shouldn\u2019t remove judges over contentious rulings.<\/p>\n<p>He also called on judges to \u201ccontinue to decide the cases before us according to our oath, doing equal right to the poor and to the rich, and performing all of our duties faithfully and impartially under the Constitution and laws of the United States.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>While the Trump administration faced pushback in the lower courts, it has scored a series of some two dozen wins on the Supreme Court\u2019s emergency docket. The court\u2019s conservative majority has allowed Trump to move ahead for now with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-transgender-military-ban-ef67038857bd5b99e128bf0b8866afb4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">banning transgender people from the military<\/a>, clawing back billions of dollars of congressionally approved federal spending, moving aggressively on immigration and firing the Senate-confirmed leaders of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-board-members-firings-nlrb-supreme-court-1ecda00f901360cc2b2f025bdde703d6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">independent federal agencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The court also handed Trump a few defeats over the last year, including in his push to deploy the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-trump-national-guard-97192a48f01dd4954f1ba505628b5f21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Guard<\/a> to U.S. cities.<\/p>\n<p>Other pivotal issues are ahead for the high court in 2026, including arguments over Trump\u2019s push to end birthright citizenship and a ruling on whether he can unilaterally impose tariffs on hundreds of countries.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts\u2019 letter contained few references to those issues.
