The second Friday after New Year\u2019s Day has earned the moniker Quitter\u2019s Day as the time by which most people have given up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"4\">It\u2019s not because people aren\u2019t sincere in wanting to improve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"6\">\u201cWhat\u2019s missing is a plan,\u201d said Dr. Fadi Tayim, a clinical neuropsychologist and director of Premier Health\u2019s Brain Mapping Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"8\">It\u2019s easy to get up on Jan. 1 and say \u2018I\u2019m going to lose 20 pounds,\u2019 Tayim said. But without a plan for how, the goal will most likely never be reached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"9\">Even more important than the how, Tayim said, is the why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"10\">\u201cWhat\u2019s important is what\u2019s the reason behind it,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat keeps you going and working toward that goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"11\">For health-related goals, such as weight loss, the why could be anything from a life-threatening condition to wanting to look better \u2014 as long as it\u2019s something that keeps you on target through the long haul.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/6PVRGJMSZIVT7IAK2NGNACPTKY.jpg\" alt=\"Working with a personal trainer is one way to help you keep your fitness resolutions. What goals have been set before and what did you learn from what worked and what didn\u2019t?<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"16\">And have a contingency plan for when things go askew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"17\">\u201cLife is not going to go from A to Z. It\u2019s going to zigzag,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Explore<a class=\"headline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/local\/fitness-experts-help-bethany-village-residents-thrive\/KHOXRO6YWZGWPKT3PZZUL3JPDE\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Fitness experts help Bethany Village residents thrive<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"19\">Improved health is the number one resolution, according to the Pew Research Center, followed by saving money and improving relationships with family and friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"20\">Robert Fleck, a personal trainer with LA Fitness in Washington Twp., said every year after New Year\u2019s Day the gym gets an uptick in new memberships and absent members returning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"22\">He said having a plan is paramount to success, along with having realistic expectations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"23\">Don\u2019t expect everything to change at once or overnight, Fleck said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"24\">\u201cTackle things one at a time. Either exercise first or diet first. It could even be sleeping habits. Everybody tries to take on everything at once and they fail,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"25\">The most important thing, he said, is to just get out there and do it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"26\">Many resolutions also focus on financial goals, such as paying off credit card debt, saving for a new house, or simply getting more educated about money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"28\">\u201cNew Year\u2019s is a really good time to review and realign your financial goals overall,\u201d said Erica Grundza, certified financial planner at Betterment, an investing and savings app.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"29\">When building your goals for 2026, Grundza recommends focusing less on the past and more on an optimistic, yet realistic, vision for the future. She recommends that you focus on reestablishing the why behind your approach to money and how you want to make it work for your life. This can be as simple as saving $10 each week in a savings account, or a bigger goal like saving to buy a house in the coming years. It\u2019s all about your own journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"30\">Resolutions can easily turn into unattainable goals that feel more like a dream, said MarieYolaine Toms, a coach and founder of Focused Fire, a financial coaching company. To avoid setting unrealistic expectations, Toms follows a \u201cno resolutions\u201d mindset and instead focuses on making an actionable plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"31\">\u201cWhat I say every year is that I am not making resolutions, I\u2019m making plans that can be tracked forward, traced back, and tweaked until completion,\u201d Toms said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text \" data-index=\"32\">Recently, Toms encouraged her clients to check their credit report with the three credit bureaus and, based on their credit reports, make an attainable plan to start a savings account.
