(File photo by Chris Stone\/Times of San Diego)<\/p>\n<p>A car struck and killed a pedestrian early Wednesday on Interstate 5 in Middletown, prompting an investigation into how the man ended up in the freeway lanes.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred about 6:40 a.m., according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chp.ca.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California Highway Patrol<\/a> spokeswoman Kimberly Gonzalez. An unidentified male pedestrian was struck by a Toyota Prius on northbound I-5, south of Sassafras Street.<\/p>\n<p>He was pronounced dead at the scene, she said. The driver of the Prius stopped and cooperated with investigators.<\/p>\n<p>A toxicology report will be completed through the San Diego County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role.<\/p>\n<p>The man\u2019s name was withheld pending family notification.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who witnessed this crash was asked by the CHP to call the San Diego area office at 858-293-6000.<\/p>\n<p>READ NEXT<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A California Highway Patrol cruiser.
