sworn in<\/a> as New York City\u2019s mayor just after midnight in a historic ceremony at a decommissioned Manhattan subway station.<\/p>\nMaking history as the first Muslim to lead the United States\u2019 largest city, Mamdani took his oath with his hand placed on a Quran.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is truly the honour and the privilege of a lifetime,\u201d Mamdani said in a brief speech.<\/p>\n
The private ceremony, conducted by New York Attorney General Letitia James at the architecturally stunning old City Hall station \u2013 one of the city\u2019s original subway stops known for its arched ceilings \u2013 marked the official transition of power.<\/p>\n
In his inaugural remarks, Mamdani highlighted the venue as a \u201ctestament to the importance of public transit to the vitality, the health and the legacy of our city\u201d while announcing Mike Flynn as his new Department of Transportation commissioner.<\/p>\n
The mayor concluded his brief address saying, \u201cThank you all so much, now I will see you later,\u201d before ascending the stairs with a smile.<\/p>\n
A more elaborate public inauguration will take place at 1pm (18:00 GMT) at City Hall. A public celebration will follow on Broadway\u2019s \u201cCanyon of Heroes\u201d, famous for hosting ticker-tape parades.<\/p>\n
As he steps into one of the US\u2019s most demanding political positions, Mamdani breaks multiple barriers.
