It&#8217;s likely to be soggy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Will it rain on the Rose Parade? It sure looks that way.<\/p>\n<p>Will it go on anyway? You betcha. <\/p>\n<p>The 137th  Rose Parade \u2014 an event famously established to show off Southern California\u2019s mild winter weather \u2014 is set to kick off at 8 a.m. Thursday in Pasadena amid a wet winter storm that could result in the first rainy parade in two decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a near 100 percent [chance] of a wet New Years Parade as well as the overnight hours leading up to it,\u201d National Weather Service meteorologists wrote in a forecast report Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>Rose Parade officials \u2014 though they would rather not jinx it \u2014 say they are prepared for a soaking. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the Tournament of Roses, we try not to use that word,\u201d David Eads, the organization\u2019s chief executive, said in a statement. \u201cHistory tells us the sun usually shows up right on time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Volunteers decorate a Kermit the Frog parade float\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"784\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767265455_580_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Volunteers  decorate Kermit the Frog on the Visit Mississippi \u201cWhere Creativity Blooms\u201d float in the run up to the Rose Parade. <\/p>\n<p>(Allen J. Schaben\/Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n<p>In addition to traditional television broadcasters and other web-based streaming services, this year\u2019s parade will, for the first time, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/tournamentofroses.com\/pasadena-tournament-of-roses-announces-first-ever-tiktok-livestream-of-the-rose-parade-presented-by-honda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">be live-streamed<\/a> on TikTok via the username @rose.parade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this first-ever TikTok LIVE stream, we\u2019re thrilled to invite a new generation of Parade fans to experience the magic of the Rose Parade from a fresh, creator-led lens,\u201d Mark Leavens, president of the Tournament of Roses, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re planning to attend in person, bring a poncho. View-blocking umbrellas are prohibited in parade grandstands and along the route. <\/p>\n<p>Lisa Derderian, a spokeswoman for the City of Pasadena, said local officials are anticipating more calls for hypothermia and foot injuries from marching along the 5.5-mile route in wet socks. <\/p>\n<p>Derderian said she expects an uptick in potentially dangerous warming bonfires, noting that \u201cin the past, we\u2019ve seen people that will throw firewood into a washing machine drum.\u201d Each year, she said, officers drive the parade route, telling people to extinguish them. <\/p>\n<p>Fires <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofpasadena.net\/city-manager\/news\/pasadena-fire-and-police-departments-issue-rose-parade-safety-tips-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">must be<\/a> in professionally manufactured barbecues at least one foot off the ground and 25 feet feet from buildings and other combustibles, according to parade officials. A fire extinguisher must be readily available.<\/p>\n<p>The parade is expected to last around two hours. Roads along the parade route <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-12-30\/2026-rose-parade-road-closures-parking-rules-you-should-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that were closed<\/a> Wednesday night, will reopen by 2 p.m. Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>The parade begins on Orange Grove Boulevard, then turns east onto Colorado for the bulk of the trek before ending at Sierra Madre Boulevard.<\/p>\n<p>Rain is forecast to reach the Los Angeles area between sunset on New Year\u2019s Eve and the morning of New Year\u2019s Day, said Mike Wofford, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. The heaviest precipitation likely will fall on New Year\u2019s Day and Saturday, with light showers the Friday in between, forecasters said.<\/p>\n<p>The storms are expected to drop 1 to 3 inches of rain in valley and coastal areas and 3 to 5 inches in the mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, New Year\u2019s Day is rain-free in the Los Angeles area.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSLosAngeles\/status\/2006116815831769390?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">According to<\/a> the National Weather Service, rain has fallen on just 10% of all New Year\u2019s Days between 1878 and 2025. In 1934, it rained 3.12 inches in Pasadena \u2014 the most ever on the holiday. That was also the year it rained more than one inch on the first day of the year in Los Angeles. <\/p>\n<p>The Weather Service has predicted 1.53 inches on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The Rose Parade started in 1890 as a promotional event by the Valley Hunt Club, a social organization, to show off Pasadena\u2019s famously mild winter weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn New York, people are buried in snow. Here, our flowers are blooming and our oranges are about to bear. Let\u2019s hold a festival to tell the world about our paradise,\u201d Charles F. Four floats \u2014 from the cities of Burbank and Sierra Madre, the Walt Disney Co., and Trader Joe\u2019s \u2014 broke down amid the wet conditions. <\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s parade theme is \u201cThe Magic in Teamwork,\u201d and the parade marshal will be Earvin \u201cMagic\u201d Johnson, the Los Angeles Lakers legend and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2023-10-30\/magic-johnson-billionaire-athlete-michael-jordan-tiger-woods-lebron-james\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">billionaire businessman<\/a> who is a co-owner of the Dodgers, Sparks and other professional sports franchises. <\/p>\n<p>The parade will take place days before the one-year anniversary of the deadly Eaton and Palisades fires that began amid hurricane-force winds and dry conditions on Jan. 7, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>The Eaton fire burned thousands of homes in Altadena, just a few miles north of Colorado Boulevard, where the bulk of the Rose Parade takes place. <\/p>\n<p>The Tournament of Roses <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/tournamentofroses.com\/pasadena-tournament-of-roses-announces-complimentary-ticket-program-for-residents-impacted-by-eaton-and-palisades-fires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is providing<\/a> more than 1,000 free grandstand tickets for fire victims to view the parade. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Will it rain on the Rose Parade?
