One of the most important things to make sure to pack for a cruise is any type of medication you might need — both prescription and over-the-counter medicines.

Most any type of medicine is expensive to purchase on board a cruise ship, and it can be hard to find in some cruise ports. Although packing light for a cruise is generally recommended, it’s helpful to overpack medications to avoid potential issues and unexpected expenses.

When it comes to bringing medications on a cruise, first-time cruisers often have questions around how to pack them and what’s permitted on board a cruise ship. Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald addressed one of those common medication packing questions as he answered questions from passengers on his popular Facebook page on Dec. 30.

<a href="https://travelhost.com/newsletters" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Want the latest cruise news and deals? One passenger looking for guidance on this reached out to John Heald on a daily Facebook post where he answers questions from passengers.

“Quick question about bringing your medications on board. When somebody takes multiple prescription drugs, as well as some over-the-counter drugs, what is necessary? Can we just take a list or do we have to bring the actual bottles? We currently put them in a pill caddy. What happens if I do not bring the original bottles? Do they confiscate my pills and I don’t have them for the rest of my cruise? Thank you for any help with this matter,” Gayle Mousaw Church wrote to Heald.

The brand ambassador’s reply offered good news for anyone who prefers to travel with a pill planner.

Related: 3 things you MUST pack for your cruise (don’t forget these!)

“Do whatever is best for you. Votes in the poll showed that the majority of passengers do in fact use a daily planner when bringing medications on a cruise.

In comments on the poll, one passenger even shared a clever idea for labeling medications when using a pill organizer for a cruise.

“When I get my prescription from the pharmacy it has extra sticky labels. I peel that label off and put it on my pill organizer. That way I have the prescription number with me, if needed.
