One Ukrainian officer with the country\u2019s security service (SBU) told CNN on Wednesday that the situation in the region was \u201cintense.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjvdxirj00033j6qmnzkx4zw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe enemy is trying to strengthen its negotiating position by attempting to capture more territory,\u201d said the officer, who goes by the call sign \u201cBankir.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjvdxirj00043j6qfr372b8n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Russians were using small groups of infantry \u201cwho are trying to break through by any means, by any route, to the positions that are least protected,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjvdxirj00053j6q2690nurk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Much of the recent fighting has been in and around the town of Huliaipole. Gen. Andrei Ivanaev, claimed the town had been taken. Ivanaev told Putin that his forces had taken over 210 square kilometers of territory in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions since early December, feeding the Kremlin\u2019s narrative that ultimately Russia will achieve its goal of occupying four regions of eastern and southern Ukraine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjvdxirj00073j6q3t8jkrao@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The unofficial Ukrainian conflict mapper <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/DeepStateUA\/23009\" target=\"_blank\">Deepstate<\/a> reported on Monday that Ukrainian troops continued to hold their positions in parts of Huliaipole but it was now a \u201cgrey zone,\u201d with the Russians having \u201cmany times more personnel.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjvdxirj00083j6qw8y83lkw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Reinforcing positions in the town was difficult because it was low-lying, Deepstate said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjve001q000o3j6qcg1o1ptl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Ukrainians rely extensively on drones in areas where they are short of infantry. In open countryside they are effective in taking out Russian platoons. But built-up areas of abandoned buildings and basements afford protection for advancing troops.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjvdxirj00093j6qn03kivty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/belarusian_silovik\/66027\" target=\"_blank\">a video<\/a> showed Russian troops had taken over a Ukrainian command post in Huliaipole and were examining laptops and files left behind.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjvdxirj000a3j6q60w1qn9i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian military, Oleksandr Syrskyi, acknowledged the capture of the command post \u201cdue to weak defenses.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjvdxirj000b3j6q7m95l997@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A territorial brigade \u201ccould not withstand the enemy\u2019s pressure during the fighting,\u201d Syrskyi said, and gradually retreated, but criticized the battalion for leaving behind confidential information.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjvdxirj000c3j6qdsqchn5h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cUkrainian forces may remain only in (Huliaipole\u2019s) western part,\u201d according to another independent monitor, the Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT). \u201cUnder these conditions, Huliaipole, much like Pokrovsk, may already be effectively captured,\u201d it said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjvdxirj000d3j6qxcr1y9xw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese troops held their positions for a long time and suffered extremely heavy losses over recent months yet were not rotated to the rear for rest and reconstitution,\u201d CIT added.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2025-12-30t080540z-1479958331-rc2dqiawfcnq-rtrmadp-3-ukraine-crisis-south-drills.JPG\" alt=\"Recruits with Ukraine's 65th Separate Mechanized Brigade take part in military training near the front line in Zaporizhzhia region, Ukraine, on December 29, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2002\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjvdxirj000e3j6q8mt0v08m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What happened in Huliaipole goes to the heart of the Ukrainian military\u2019s dilemma.
