{"id":486043,"date":"2026-01-02T01:56:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-02T01:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/486043\/"},"modified":"2026-01-02T01:56:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-02T01:56:09","slug":"singapore-economy-jumps-5-7-in-fourth-quarter-beating-expectations-on-strong-manufacturing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/486043\/","title":{"rendered":"Singapore economy jumps 5.7% in fourth quarter, beating expectations on strong manufacturing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Singapore tops the list in the 2025 Global Talent Competitiveness Index by INSEAD and Portulans Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin Chan Wai Meng | E+ | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Singapore&#8217;s economy expanded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singstat.gov.sg\/-\/media\/files\/news\/advgdp4q2025.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5.7% year on year for the fourth quarter<\/a>, driven mainly by a sharp increase in manufacturing output during the three months through December.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Trade and Industry said that Singapore&#8217;s manufacturing sector posted a 15% expansion, a massive jump compared to the 4.9% growth in the third quarter. <\/p>\n<p>Growth during the quarter was largely driven by the biomedical manufacturing and electronics clusters, the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturing makes up about 20% of the city-state&#8217;s GDP.<\/p>\n<p>Most other sectors contracted during the quarter, including construction and services.<\/p>\n<p>The advance estimate was higher than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/21\/singapore-q3-gdp-forecast-mti-enterprise-exports-pharmaceuticals-drugs-tariffs-trade-mas.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revised 4.3% growth in the previous quarter<\/a>, lifting full-year GDP growth to 4.8%, as announced by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmo.gov.sg\/newsroom\/2026-new-year-message-by-pm-lawrence-wong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Year&#8217;s message.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The 4.8% growth had surpassed the country&#8217;s Ministry of Trade and Industry&#8217;s upgraded forecast of &#8220;around 4%&#8221; in November. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a better outcome than we expected, given the circumstances,&#8221; Wong said, while warning that sustaining the current pace of growth would be challenging.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore&#8217;s MTI had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mti.gov.sg\/newsroom\/mti-upgrades-gdp-growth-forecast-for-2025-to--around-4-0-per-cent--and-forecasts-gdp-growth-of--1-0-to-3-0-per-cent--for-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forecast<\/a> a GDP growth figure of about 1%-3% for 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore had earlier cautioned that 2025 would be challenging, citing trade risks after U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration slapped trade tariffs on dozens of countries in his &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; on April.<\/p>\n<p>Despite having a free trade agreement with the U.S. since 2004, Singapore was hit with the 10% baseline tariff. Wong said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MJBfcMZ_s6I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the time<\/a> that &#8220;these are not actions one does to a friend.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Singapore is highly dependent on trade, with its trade-to-GDP ratio exceeding 320% in 2024, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/NE.TRD.GNFS.ZS?locations=SG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data from the World Bank<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The country also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/14\/singapore-second-quarter-q2-gdp-growth-2025-tariff-trade-mti-mas-singstat-economy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned in April last year that zero growth<\/a>\u00a0was a possibility and eased monetary policy twice in 2025 to prepare for a slowdown. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Singapore tops the list in the 2025 Global Talent Competitiveness Index by INSEAD and Portulans Institute.
