PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Snow squalls moved quickly through parts of Philadelphia on Thursday, but the ice they left behind caused hazardous conditions on untreated roads, triggering multiple crashes and injuries across the city.<\/p>\n
In Manayunk, icy streets led to back-to-back crashes on the 200 block of Leverington Avenue within minutes.<\/p>\n
“I was a little nervous walking around. It’s, I mean, if I slip, I’m going down that hill,” said Emma Field of Pittsburgh, who was walking in the area.<\/p>\n
Raven Brown of Roxborough was riding in the passenger seat when her cousin lost control of their car on the icy street and slammed into a parked vehicle.<\/p>\n
“We couldn’t stop,” Brown said. “This could have been so much worse, could have kept going down the street and hit that house.”<\/p>\n
Brown said the ice was difficult to detect.<\/p>\n
“It’s just icy all over. You would think that it’s not that icy when you look at it, but it’s just black ice, it’s very hard to even tell if it’s safe to come down these streets,” she said.<\/p>\n
“I feel like they should salt the roads, especially over here, because it’s so hilly, so like stuff like this don’t happen.”<\/p>\n
Minutes later, another crash occurred a few hundred feet up the road.<\/p>\n
Tanya Breslow of East Falls said she narrowly avoided being hit.<\/p>\n
“I was a little shaken up because that could have been us,” she said.<\/p>\n
Breslow described losing control of her car moments earlier.<\/p>\n
“I thought there was something wrong with my brakes. I just slid,” she said. “We pulled over, tried to figure out what to do, and I saw another car right over here. They just slid and smashed right into this truck. It’s awful.”<\/p>\n
Similar conditions were reported in East Falls, where a two-car pileup on Stanton Street drew neighbors outside to help stranded drivers.<\/p>\n
“It gets icy on this street. People don’t realize how icy it is and start going sideways and take out a few cars,” said Allen Carson of East Falls. “I heard people sliding down and the crunching of cars, so I came out to put a little ice down, and hopefully we can get them out of here.”<\/p>\n
Carson suggested the timing may have contributed to the untreated roads.<\/p>\n
“Maybe no one was expecting this,” he said. “I’m sure being a holiday doesn’t help.”<\/p>\n
While no serious injuries were reported in Manayunk or East Falls, officials said three people were injured in Feltonville earlier in the day, two critically, when a driver lost control on snow and ice and struck a utility pole at G Street and East Wyoming Avenue.<\/p>\n
The city said Thursday afternoon that the Streets Department had trucks treating roads and added more crews throughout the day as conditions evolved.<\/p>\n
