PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Colorful costumes, confetti and music filled Broad Street in Philadelphia on Wednesday as the Mummers Parade celebrated its 125th year, despite winter weather forcing changes to the tradition.<\/p>\n
The annual New Year’s Day event drew crowds bundled against the cold to watch generations of performers strut in elaborate outfits.<\/p>\n
“It’s a big part of our culture, and it’s just fun to do it on New Year’s,” said Jennifer Figueroa of Northeast Philadelphia.<\/p>\n
Snow squalls, icy roads and high winds prompted the Philadelphia String Band Association to postpone its competition.<\/p>\n
“The props started to blow all over the place, quite a few were destroyed almost immediately from the wind,” said Jim Donio of the association.<\/p>\n
Organizers said several people were injured by flying props on Wednesday morning, and one person was hospitalized after being struck in the head by a nail.<\/p>\n
“They want to do their show, so of course it’s disappointing. I’m disappointed,” Donio said.<\/p>\n
Although the competition was delayed, the parade continued with performances from clubs that had rehearsed all year.<\/p>\n
“We like to do it. We prefer, and we’re always like doing it on New Year’s Day because that’s what it’s for. It’s for bringing in the new year with a big bang,” said Michael, a participant.<\/p>\n
This year’s parade also marked the start of Philadelphia’s celebrations for America’s 250th birthday.<\/p>\n
Families lined the streets, some hoisting children on their shoulders to take in the uniquely Philadelphia tradition.<\/p>\n
“I was a baby. These are my babies. We love it, we come down every year,” said Jimmy Mac of Drexel Hill.<\/p>\n
Organizers have not yet announced when the postponed string band competition will take place.<\/p>\n
