{"id":487119,"date":"2026-01-02T12:59:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-02T12:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/487119\/"},"modified":"2026-01-02T12:59:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-02T12:59:10","slug":"french-government-defends-granting-citizenship-to-the-clooneys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/487119\/","title":{"rendered":"French Government Defends Granting Citizenship to the Clooneys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tActor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/george-clooney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_george-clooney_1\" data-tag=\"george-clooney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Clooney<\/a> and his wife <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/amal-clooney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_amal-clooney_1\" data-tag=\"amal-clooney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amal Clooney<\/a> were granted French citizenship because \u201cthey contribute, through their distinguished actions, to France\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/international\/\" id=\"auto-tag_international_1\" data-tag=\"international\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">international<\/a> influence and cultural outreach,\u201d the French government said Wednesday, defending their naturalization that was questioned by a junior French minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe naturalizations of the Kentucky-born star of the Ocean\u2019s series of heist movies, his wife and human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, and their twins Ella and Alexander were announced last weekend in the Journal Officiel, where French government decrees are published.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMarie-Pierre Vedrenne, a junior minister at the Interior Ministry, expressed misgivings Wednesday that some of the Clooneys\u2019 new French compatriots may think that the star couple was granted special treatment. The actor speaks only what he himself says is \u201chorrible, horrible\u201d French.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe message being sent is not good,\u201d Vedrenne said in an interview with broadcaster France Info. \u201cThere is an issue of fairness that, in my eyes, is absolutely essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe couple purchased an estate in France in 2021 and Clooney has said that it\u2019s their primary residence. Non-French residents of France have multiple possible routes to becoming naturalized. It wasn\u2019t clear whether the 64-year-old actor retained his American citizenship. His 47-year-old wife was born in Lebanon and raised in the U.K and naturalized by France under her maiden name, Amal Alamuddin. The 8-year-old twins were born in London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Foreign Ministry said the Clooneys were eligible for citizenship under a French law that allows for the naturalization of foreign nationals who contribute to France\u2019s international influence and economic well-being.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt argued that France\u2019s cinema industry will benefit from the actor\u2019s clout as a global movie star and said that as a lawyer, Amal Clooney regularly works with academic institutions and international organizations in France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThey maintain strong personal, professional and family ties with our country,\u201d the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cLike many French citizens, we are delighted to welcome Georges and Amal Clooney into the national community,\u201d it concluded, giving the actor\u2019s first name a French twist by adding the \u201cs\u201d at the end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe decision was also defended by Vedrenne\u2019s superior at the Interior Ministry, Interior Minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez, who said he signed the naturalization decree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a big chance for our country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn recent media interviews when he was promoting Jay Kelly, Clooney said that he is trying to teach himself French using a language-learning app. He said that his wife and children speak the language perfectly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThey speak French in front of me so that they can say terrible things about me to my face and I don\u2019t know,\u201d he joked, speaking to French broadcaster Canal+.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFrench media have reported that the Clooneys live part-time in their luxury 18th-century villa outside the town of Brignoles in southern France, where they can keep a lower profile and their children are protected from unauthorized photographs by French privacy laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn an interview with Esquire in October, Clooney said: \u201cI was worried about raising our kids in L.A., in the culture of Hollywood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don\u2019t want them being compared to somebody else\u2019s famous kids,\u201d he said. Growing up away from the spotlight in France, \u201cthey have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in.
