County beaches after rain"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Forget, for now, that \u201cpolar bear\u201d ocean swim. Public health officials have issued an ocean <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.lacounty.gov\/phcommon\/public\/eh\/water_quality\/beach_grades.cfm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water quality alert <\/a>for all Los Angeles County beaches.<\/p>\n<p>In a notice issued Thursday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said the advisory will be in effect until at least 4 p.m. Monday because of increased bacteria levels. Officials said the advisory could be extended if it rains more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBacteria levels can increase significantly during and after rainstorms, as contaminants within the runoff enters the ocean,\u201d the department said.<\/p>\n<p>Once that water reaches the ocean, it can lead to elevated bacteria levels that can cause illness, the advisory said, especially in children and the elderly.<\/p>\n<p>The advisory came on the heels of a rare Jan. 1 rainstorm that <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-01-01\/new-years-day-downpour-floods-southern-california-highways\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drenched Southern California <\/a>and rained on the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-01-01\/la-me-rose-parade-new-year-pasadena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rose Parade<\/a> for the first time since 2006. The storm also triggered slides and major road closures across Los Angeles as well as swift water rescues in San Diego. <\/p>\n<p>Flooding of the 5 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley prompted Caltrans to shut down all lanes between Tuxford Street and Lankershim Boulevard for several hours. A mudslide <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/pw.lacounty.gov\/roadclosures\/list_closures.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closed Big Tujunga Canyon Road<\/a> in Angeles National Forest between the Angeles Forest Highway and Vogel Flat Road, marking the latest  county road closure due to flooding and slides since Dec. 24.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Forget, for now, that \u201cpolar bear\u201d ocean swim.
