{"id":488515,"date":"2026-01-03T03:10:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T03:10:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/488515\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T03:10:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T03:10:18","slug":"map-shows-18-states-including-oregon-where-northern-lights-may-be-visible-friday-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/488515\/","title":{"rendered":"Map shows 18 states, including Oregon, where northern lights may be visible Friday night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AIQZ25VRU5HY7DAQ6I3EPDLEVQ\">It\u2019s a brand new year, which means 365 more chances to catch a glimpse of one of the night sky\u2019s most spectacular light shows. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QYVEMPM73RA6VLFLOSFAAUVHTA\">Lucky for some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/weather\/2025\/12\/now-is-the-best-time-to-see-the-cosmic-fire-of-creation-in-the-sky-heres-how-to-spot-it.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">astronomy<\/a> enthusiasts, the first of those chances may come this weekend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"43KHE4FKONCVPD6GQEQT6NIM5Y\">The northern lights could be visible in more than a dozen states \u2014 including Oregon \u2014 Friday night as minor to moderate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/#slideshow-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">geomagnetic storm conditions<\/a> persist, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Space Weather Prediction Center. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Aurora viewline map for Jan. 2, 2026, including 18 states.\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/C2B5LRYU6ZBQ3JYJ2B2WPB572Y.png\"  \/>The Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, aurora forecast.Courtesy of NOAA<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"U6ZQUQHUOFDFBKAGAR77DQH7WM\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomorrow-night-experimental\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomorrow-night-experimental\">aurora viewline<\/a> just skims the top of Oregon, offering a chance to see the lights along the Oregon-Washington border and, more optimistically, within the northeast corner of the state. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DBZSWVBGNZFUBITIBPGJTVWT6M\">Portlanders, though, probably shouldn\u2019t hold their breath. <a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/MapClick.php?lat=45.51601791381836&amp;lon=-122.68142700195312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forecasts<\/a> across the area are expectedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/weather\/2026\/01\/friday-brings-scattered-showers-to-portland-gorge-sees-more-freezing-rain.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rainy and cloudy<\/a> \u2014 not prime aurora-spotting conditions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DA5XLF2UTJAX7EGQEDWSO2QACU\">People across 18 states could have a shot at catching the lights beginning Friday night, including those in Alaska, North Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Michigan, Idaho, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Washington, Iowa, Oregon, New York, Wyoming, Nebraska and Illinois. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OIJEVVE6ANDX7LPFCBFKOWWUCQ\">Our solar system is currently in the middle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/news\/201509-solar-cycle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar cycle 25<\/a>, an approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/spaceplace.nasa.gov\/solar-cycles\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">11-year cycle of magnetic activity<\/a> coming from the sun. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LKX4FPOOINHW7OLT4AJNYUCBSY\">If you plan to try and see the lights Friday, stay away from light pollution and look toward the northern horizon.
