His cause of death wasn\u2019t immediately reported.<\/p>\n<p>Mulrooney began his comedy career in the 1980s at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qJoa0BDAGlo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">now-defunct<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2002\/11\/17\/hip-pips-hooray-as-club-turns-40\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pips Club<\/a> in Sheepshead Bay, per an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dignitymemorial.com\/obituaries\/staten-island-ny\/john-mulrooney-12684954\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">online obituary<\/a>. The venue is also known for fueling the careers of Woody Allen, Rodney Dangerfield, Robert Klein, Lenny Bruce, Adam Sandler and <a href=\"https:\/\/bklyner.com\/andrew-dice-clay-recalls-first-performance-sheepsheads-pips-comedy-club-sheepshead-bay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Andrew \u201cDice\u201d Clay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After performing at other legendary spots like The Comedy Store, The Comic Strip and The Laugh Factory, Mulrooney later made his mark on TV by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0612492\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">hosting\u00a0an episode of \u201cThe Late Show\u201d<\/a> after the exit of Joan Rivers and appearing on \u201cThe Pat Sajak Show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He got another shot at stardom as the host of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0096562\/?ref_=nm_flmg_job_2_accord_2_cdt_t_7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cComic Strip Live,\u201d<\/a> a televised version of standup acts filmed in front of a live audience. It first aired locally in Los Angeles then nationally on Saturday nights before it ended in 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Many New Yorkers who never saw Mulrooney\u2019s act knew his voice from the radio shows he hosted on WPYX in Albany and WPDH in Poughkeepsie. In 2014, he launched \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/256-mulrooney-in-the-morning-31025016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mulrooney in the Morning<\/a>\u201d for iHeartRadio.<\/p>\n<p>He also added law enforcement to his resume by joining the Coxsackie Police Department as a 52-year-old rookie in 2010, and serving through 2024. During that time, he became a \u201csought-after performer for police and fire department fundraisers across the country, using comedy to support first responders and the communities they protect,\u201d his obituary said.<\/p>\n<p>Mulrooney told the Times Union in 2010 that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/news\/article\/night-of-comedy-in-brewster-4004890.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">enjoyed working a crowd<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look at the audience as a spice rack,\u201d he said. \u201cI know I\u2019m gonna make a great meal; I\u2019m just not sure of the ingredients yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DS6bj75jSML\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">honored his former Pips colleague on Instagram<\/a>, remembering him as a comedian who made his audience part of every show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrowd work was his thing long before it became a thing,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/andrewdiceclay.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOop1xovXBvxjn6kPTz1nbbVi9WD_9k9h61X-i2D8HnS7iryQO0I3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">raunchy comic<\/a> recalled. \u201cHe was the last comedian to come out of that club that everybody thought would become a really, really big star.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clay added that while Mulrooney never did achieve the same level of fame as some of their other friends, he was \u201creally amazing\u201d at what he did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never gave up, he never stopped trying, which is what it\u2019s all about in my book,\u201d Clay said. \u201cNot everybody climbs to the top, and not everybody becomes a superstar. John was a great, great comedian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mulrooney is remembered by his family as a loving son, a devoted sibling and a cherished uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.<\/p>\n<p>A 2 p.m. visitation will be held on Sunday at the Casey Funeral Home on Staten Island, followed by a Monday morning funeral service at the nearby Church of the Holy Family.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Brooklyn-born comedian John Mulrooney is dead at age 67.
