NEW YORK (WABC) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s first executive order revoked all orders issued by former Mayor Eric Adams after his indictment on federal corruption charges — including two that supported Israel.<\/p>\n
One revoked executive order barred city agencies from boycotting or divesting from Israel.<\/p>\n
Another adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism that equates some forms of anti-Israel criticism, like opposition to Israel’s ethnically Jewish character, with antisemitism.<\/p>\n
Mamdani said he would not revoke Mayor Adams’ creation of the city’s Office to Combat Antisemitism.<\/p>\n
On Friday, Mamdani said he stands by the revocation of the Adams executive order.<\/p>\n
He said “a number of leading Jewish organizations have immense concerns” about the IHRA definition used in Adams’ executive order and stressed that his administration will be “relentless in its efforts to combat hate and division.”<\/p>\n
The Consul General of Israel in New York, Ambassador Ofir Akunis, released the following statement:<\/p>\n
“The Mayor of New York said he would be a mayor for everyone, yet he is taking dangerous steps in the exact opposite direction,” the statement said. “The decisions to revoke the IHRA definition of antisemitism and to allow for boycotts against Israel are actions that pose an immediate threat to the safety of Jewish communities in New York City and could lead to an increase in violent antisemitic attacks throughout the city.”<\/p>\n
However, CAIR-NY says it “welcomes Mayor Mamdani’s revocation of Adams’ ‘Israel First’ Executive Orders, Restoration of Free Speech.”<\/p>\n
“This unconstitutional, Israel First attack on free speech should have never been issued in the first place,” CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher, Esq., said. “We applaud Mayor Mamdani for immediately overturning it.”<\/p>\n
